It lays down an invisible, heat-stable protective layer that helps keep wheels intact even after long drives with hot brakes. Unlike classic quick detailers that only bring gloss, this formula actively works against heat-driven deposits. Brake dust and road grime cling far less, which makes the next clean noticeably easier. After the wash, just rinse them off, give the bottle a good shake and spray the detailer straight onto a clean microfibre cloth (e.g. A1 DAS TUCH Premium Mikrofaser). Then spread it evenly over the wheel and buff off with the dry side. This step brings instant gloss and leaves an even protective layer. If you want to push the long-term effect further, keep the treated wheels away from moisture for about two hours. Day-to-day from Detailing1: use two cloths – one to spread, one to wipe – and you get a flawless finish with no streaks. The detailer lifts light dirt and dust, which makes it ideal for a quick clean between washes or as a finish after the main wash. Important: don't use it on hot wheels or in direct sun.

Gloss, colour refresh and compatibility with every wheel type

Whether high-gloss polished, painted, anodised or wrapped – the P21S Felgen-Detailer delivers convincing results on every surface. The upshot: deep gloss, visible colour refresh and a noticeably smoother finish. Thanks to the slick surface, water beads off reliably and dirt barely gets a grip. On high-end alloy wheels in particular, which often react badly to harsh cleaners, the detailer scores with its mild but highly effective formula. It cares for the surface without degreasing it or attacking the protective film already there. Paired with a regular wheel clean, e.g. with the P21S Felgenreiniger Power Gel, you get an ideal care system: deep-clean wheels with long-lasting gloss and protection. An acid-free cleaning gel from Dr. Wack that chemically binds iron-bearing brake dust and turns red-violet while it does it. Approved for painted, anodised, mirror-polished and chrome wheels. Its active ingredient, sodium mercaptoacetate, thioglycolate in the trade, locks the iron compounds out of brake dust into a water-soluble cage. Day-to-day that means the black deposit runs off with the rinse water instead of spreading across the spokes under a brush.

The gel consistency is not thickener for show. A thin cleaner slides down a vertical wheel face in seconds and takes its reaction time with it. The POWER GEL stays where the spray puts it: on the hub, down in the spoke roots, on the rim flange. It is that cling time that turns three minutes of dwell into three minutes of contact.

Three minutes is enough, below ten degrees it is not. Dr. Wack gives 3 to 5 minutes of dwell time. If the temperature drops below 10 °C or the wheel is heavily caked, the manufacturer itself stretches that to at least 10 minutes. Work in February on summer timing and you rinse the reaction away before it has finished.

The colour is a readout, not a bonus effect. The gel goes onto the wheel pink, so you see straight away every spot the spray missed. Wherever iron-bearing dust is sitting, the colour pulls through to a dark red-violet. After 3 minutes you know whether a second pass is needed before you even touch the hose.

Four container sizes, one formula. 750 millilitres with a trigger gun, 2 and 5 litres as canisters, 25 litres as a refill station. Between the small bottle and the big containers the price per litre drops by around a third without a thing changing in the mix. What you lose is the spray head.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: We get a lot of questions about a whitish film left on the wheel after rinsing. That is usually not residue from the gel but limescale out of the rinse water, drying onto the warm wheel while you are standing at the next one. So work through wheel by wheel: spray, wait 3 to 5 minutes, rinse, wipe down with the drying towel, and only then the next one. Spraying all four at once looks like a time saver and costs you the second pass.

Below ten degrees the POWER GEL needs ten minutes

Spray onto the cold, dry wheel, wait 3 to 5 minutes, rinse off with a strong jet of water. Below ten degrees or with heavy brake dust, Dr. Wack stretches that to at least 10 minutes.

Cold means: a quarter of an hour after the last hard braking, and not in direct sun. A wheel that has just come off the motorway still carries the residual heat of the brake disc in its face. The gel dries on there before the reaction is through, and afterwards you are scrubbing dried cleaner instead of brake dust.

Dry is the second half of the condition. Hose the wheel down first and you dilute the gel at the moment you lay it on, weakening exactly the property you bought it for. Spray from the bottom up so gel running down always meets untreated surface, and take in the hub, the spoke roots and the edge against the tyre on purpose. Loose grit on the wheel is no problem, it comes off with it.

On quantity: generous, but not twice over. The gel works through contact, not through layer thickness, and a second coat onto a first one that is still wet buys you nothing but consumption. In the MOTORRAD hands-on test it was exactly this cling that explained the low usage: whatever stays up there needs no topping up. On a deep-dish wheel with narrow spokes a short second burst into the spoke roots still pays, because that is where the least gel arrives.

Rinsing then runs top down, until no pink haze comes off any more. Wheels come before the paint in the wash order, otherwise you carry the dissolved iron dust over the doors afterwards. If a residue is left after rinsing, a second short pass is the right answer, not a longer dwell. Users agree across the board that an hour of contact gets you no more than ten minutes does.

The colour change flags the brake dust, the dwell time is what dissolved it

The colour change is an indicator, not a cleaning step. It tells you where iron-bearing dust is sitting. The work was done by the minutes before it, not by the colour.

That is more than splitting hairs, because two wrong expectations hang off it. First: a wheel where almost nothing changes colour is no proof of a weak product, it is usually a wheel with little iron on it. Second: a deep violet wheel is not clean yet, it is marked. It only gets clean once the bound dust is in the rinse water.

Two hard limits go with that. The POWER GEL cleans, it does not protect. After rinsing, the wheel surface is bare and open, and the next lot of brake dust keys in just as fast. If you want to stretch the cleaning intervals, you lay a wheel sealant on afterwards, otherwise you start from zero every two weeks. And on wheels that have seen a whole winter season through, one pass is rarely enough. Two goes of three minutes beat one of twenty.

On mirror-polished and anodised surfaces Dr. Wack recommends a compatibility test on a hidden spot before the first use. And the smell: thioglycolate compounds have a sharp odour, the formula now carries fragrance on top, and that does not make it odour-free. In an enclosed space you notice it clearly, outdoors barely at all.

That leaves the line on the label. "Repeat test winner" holds for the range, not automatically for this bottle: in the AUTO BILD comparison in issue 22/2021 with eleven wheel cleaners, it was the P21S HIGH END wheel cleaner that stood top with 183 out of 200 points, not the POWER GEL. That is not a mark against it, it is a question of who entered: the POWER GEL was not in that field.

The test figure you can pin on this bottle comes from the MOTORRAD hands-on test, which landed on 4 out of 5 stars. It praised the cling and the material compatibility on paint and chrome, and criticised a spray head that worked itself loose in use. If you want the formula that went through the comparison test, take the HIGH END. If you need gel cling, a colour readout and big containers, you are in the right place here.

Dr. Wack builds the POWER GEL as a refill system, not as a one-way bottle

The POWER GEL comes in four container sizes from 750 millilitres to 25 litres. The big canisters carry no spray head, they are meant for refilling and not for direct use.

For one car that comes round every two to three weeks, the 750 millilitre bottle with the trigger gun is the right size. It is ready to go, it stands on the shelf without decanting, and it is the only version Dr. Wack ships with a trigger gun. From the second car in the household, with winter and summer wheels running in parallel, or with a driving style that makes the dust to match, the maths tips towards the 2 or 5 litre canister.

The 25 litre refill station is no clearance lot from a different batch. It is the same mix that runs into the 750 millilitre bottle in Baar-Ebenhausen, just without a trigger gun in the box. Dr. Wack has carried the product since 1976, and the spread of container sizes follows from that: hold a formula stable for half a century and you can fill it into the same bottle and the same drum for everyone from the home driveway to the tyre fitter.

Who the product is not built for belongs in the picture just as much. If you wash your car twice a year and let the wheels run in between, this is no one-shot rescue for baked-on deposits, it is a product that plays its advantage with regular use. On a painted winter wheel that has taken a season of chippings and road grit, the first pass takes the brake dust off and leaves the rest standing; only the second one makes it even.

And if you are only after shine, a wheel wax serves you better than a cleaner. Instead of running off, the gel sits evenly across the surface – even on vertical faces. That gives the active components longer to work and they bite harder. Over the dwell time (about 3–5 minutes) they cut through layers of brake dust, metal particles and oil residue. The signature colour indicator shows you the progress: once the cleaner turns purple to black, the dirt is lifted and rinses straight off. Spray it evenly onto dry, cooled-down wheels – best from about 20 cm away. Then let it dwell for 3–5 minutes, until the purple colour is clearly showing. After that, rinse off well with a strong jet or pressure washer. With really baked-in grime a soft wheel-brush set gives it a hand. Important: don't use it on hot wheels or in direct sun. A white, paste-style metal polish from Dr. Wack that mechanically takes the dull oxide layer off aluminium, chrome, stainless steel, silver, brass and copper and leaves a protective film behind. Not for anodised surfaces and not for chromed plastic.

P21S "Metall-/ Alu-Polish" is a metal polish from Dr. Wack that uncovers bare surfaces again instead of coating them. Aluminium, chrome and stainless steel react with the oxygen in the air and pull on a wafer-thin oxide layer that scatters light instead of mirroring it. You know it from the silver cutlery in the drawer: it does not get dirty, it tarnishes. For you that means no cleaner shifts that dull grey, it has to be taken off.

The data sheet does not list a pH value for this product at all, it simply says “not applicable”. The paste is not water-based, so there is neither acid nor alkali that could work on the metal. What comes off comes off by pure abrasion, steered by pressure and by the lines you work in. In practice: leaving it on too long does the metal no harm, it only makes wiping it off more of a chore. What you dose here is pressure.

The paste is mixed in Baar-Ebenhausen, and its density of 1.22 grams per cubic centimetre at 20 °C gives away what is in the tube. Although almost half the formula is volatile, it weighs a good deal more than water. That weight comes from the solid abrasive bodies, which is why 100 ml of contents put 122 grams on the scales.

Then there is the consistency. The data sheet quotes a viscosity between 2,000 and 6,000 millipascal seconds, which is thick honey territory. Day-to-day you notice it because the paste stays put on a vertical tailpipe instead of running off before you have worked it in.

Six materials out of one 100-millilitre tube. Aluminium, chrome, stainless steel, silver, brass and copper are all on the approval list, painted or bare. For the chrome strip, the stainless tailpipe and the brass fitting on a classic you do not need three products, you need one tube and three clean wads of polishing wadding.

129 out of 155 points in the chrome polish test. AUTO BILD ran nine chrome polishes against each other on 4 May 2026, and the Metall-/ Alu-Polish came out on top with the verdict “highly recommended”. 100 of the 155 points hung on the finish pattern and the surface gloss alone, so on the question of how clean the cut looks once you are done.

The flash-off phase is evaporation, not waiting. Around 48 per cent of the formula is volatile. In the short pause between working it in and wiping it off, that carrier goes into the air and leaves the protective film behind on the exposed metal. You notice it like this: on a warm day the film goes matt and ready to wipe faster than it does somewhere cool and shaded.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: We see the most expensive mistake regularly before the tube is even open — anodised and clear-coated aluminium looks like bare metal but carries a protective layer that this polish takes off with everything else. So run the white cloth test: a pea-sized blob on a white cotton cloth, rubbed on a hidden patch for twenty seconds. If the mark goes grey to black, you have bare metal in front of you, because that residue is the oxide layer. If the cloth stays white, there is anodising or clear coat on top, and that is where the polish stops.

You polish the whole strip, never just the dull patch.

The paste goes onto polishing wadding and not straight onto the metal, gets worked in with pressure, flashes off briefly and is then wiped away with a clean microfibre cloth.

Wash first, dry second, polish third. On a dirty surface you grind loose grit along under the wadding, and the fine lines that leaves show up more clearly on polished metal than on paint. A surface that mirrors shows every mistake twice over.

The reason for the wadding is dosing. Put the paste straight onto the surface and it sits too thick in one spot and spreads unevenly on the first pass. On the wadding the same amount spreads across the whole contact face, and the pressure from your hand arrives evenly at the metal. That is exactly what sits behind the AUTO BILD sub-score for spreadability.

The second rule is in small print on the tube and gets skipped over constantly: for an even result you always work the whole surface. Go at the dull patch on the tailpipe on its own and you end up with two states side by side and a visible line between them. A chrome strip gets done edge to edge, a tailpipe all the way round, a wheel as a whole.

On painted surfaces, painted alloy wheels for instance, the manufacturer explicitly calls for minimal effort. There is no oxide there, there is paint, and paint will not take the pressure bare metal needs. If you are doing several metal parts in one go, the metal polishes from Dr. Wack also run to the motorcycle version, built around the same way of working.

Brown speckles on stainless tailpipes are usually fallout, foreign iron particles that have taken hold. The polish takes those off mechanically. A chemical decon step does dissolve them more gently, but it does not bring back the shine the surface needs afterwards.

Anodised alu does not get polished, it gets taken off.

Anodising is not paint and not colour, it is an oxide layer grown on the aluminium in a bath, so exactly the material this polish is built to take off.

The paste plays to its strength wherever bare metal is out in the air: stainless tailpipes, chrome trim on a modern classic, unpainted forged wheels, motorcycle parts, brass and copper fittings. There is a genuine oxide layer there, and the dark streak you see on the cloth afterwards is the proof that it is off.

The manufacturer draws two hard limits. Anodised aluminium stays off limits, because the anodised layer is itself the protection and the abrasion simply takes it with it. What appears underneath is unprotected raw material. And on chromed plastic parts the paste has no business: the chrome sits there as a wafer-thin metal film on the plastic and you have polished through it before you notice.

What the paste also does not do: deep scoring, pitting and corrosion that has already eaten into the material. It works at the surface, not down in it. If you are bringing a chrome strip or a tailpipe up to a mirror shine by hand, this is the right tool. If a large dull alu panel has to be cut back by machine first, you reach for the metal polish with a medium cut and come back to this paste for the finish.

The shine is a state with a shelf life, not a result.

Bare metal starts reacting with the oxygen in the air again from the first moment, which is why metal polish is a rhythm and not a one-off appointment.

That is exactly what the protective film left by the paste works against. It slows the tarnishing, it does not stop it. How long it lasts is something Dr. Wack deliberately does not state for this product, and that is fair enough: a tailpipe in winter use stands in a different place from a trim strip on a car kept under cover. On wheels you put a wheel sealant from the same line over the top and stretch the interval noticeably.

The tube makes sense for anyone living with unpainted metal on the car: modern-classic and classic drivers with chrome, riders with polished parts on the bike, detailers who do the stainless tailpipes as the last job before handover. It makes no sense for someone after a permanent fix. If you never want to polish again, have the surface clear-coated and look after the paint from then on, not the metal.

Commercially that makes the 100-millilitre tube not a small size but the right one. A pea-sized blob goes onto the wadding per pass, and anyone who keeps to the rhythm gets through less of it than someone working against a full year of oxide once a year. Store it frost-free, tightly closed and away from food.

The trick no tube prints on the label: do not reach for the polish once the surface has gone dull, reach for it while it still shines. On freshly tarnished metal a light pass is enough and barely anything stays on the cloth. On two years of oxide the same shine costs you real material, and what once sticks to the cloth does not come back. Aluminium does not grow back.

Dr. Wack
