The reason you can see a scratch like that at all isn't missing paint. The groove has rough, broken flanks, and they bounce incoming light back in every direction instead of one. Your eye reads that as a white line.

Think frosted glass. The pane isn't dark, it's just rough, and that's exactly why you can't see through it. A fine scratch is the miniature version of that, a few microns wide. The abrasives in Kratzer Polish have a very uniform grain size and break down into smaller and smaller particles as you work. They smooth the flanks until the spot reflects light in a single, focused direction again. You'll notice it: the reflection runs across the spot without a break.

The alcohol test proved it. In 2022, AUTO BILD compared scratch removers and then wiped the polished areas down with an alcohol solution — in the scene, that step is called a panel wipe. Whatever had only been covered up with silicone showed up again. With Kratzer Polish, the gloss stayed put: 259.5 out of 300 points, grade 1.6, a win against nine competitors and Product of the Year.

50 ml, not a gram of silicone. Silicone-free isn't a label here, it's the reason the result lasts. There's simply nothing that could slip into the groove and fake gloss. A second benefit, in case a panel gets resprayed soon: body shops keep silicone away from the car, because residue in fresh paint causes craters.

Paint, bumpers and headlights from one tube. On hard plastic, Dr. Wack approves three kinds of damage: yellowing, dullness and fine scratches, especially on polycarbonate headlight lenses. In practice, that means you don't need a second product for the cloudy headlight, or for the branch scratch on the door.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: Use two cloths, not one. Dr. Wack includes the microfibre cloth specifically for buffing off; according to the instructions, you apply with a damp cloth. Do both with the same rag and at the end you'll drag the saturated side back over the freshly polished spot, turning gloss into smears. So use a second, slightly damp cloth to apply, and keep the included one dry for removal. What we see day-to-day, that's the one move that decides between clean and almost clean.

Once it's dried on, Kratzer Polish stops working

Direct sun and warm panels make the polish dry on before it has done its job. It needs a clean, dry, cool surface and a cloth that stays damp.

Shake the tube, put a small amount on the damp cloth, then work it into the spot with pressure. Work in palm-sized sections rather than the whole door — Dr. Wack explicitly says to treat larger areas section by section.

As long as the cloth stays damp, the abrasives stay mobile. Once it dries, you're just pushing paste around the paint instead of removing material. Then add more product rather than rubbing longer.

Work a little beyond the scratch. Polish removes clear coat, and if you stop exactly on the line, you create a hard edge between treated and untreated paint. In raking light you'll then see a patch instead of a scratch. Feather out 2 to 3 cm beyond it with decreasing pressure and the transition disappears.

Then let the spot dry on well and buff it to a high gloss with the included dry cloth. If the scratch is still there, repeat the pass. That's the intended route, not a sign that the tube is too weak. The first time, a door edge takes longer than you'd think; by the third time, you'll do it in passing.

The formula is approved for machine polishers. That's worth it for a dull headlight or a bonnet scratched all over; for a single branch scratch, your hand is quicker than setting up the machine. If you see holograms in direct light afterwards — fine smears in the reflection — the pressure was too high or the pad too dry.

If your fingernail catches, only a body shop can help

A1 "Kratzer Polish" works in the clear coat, the top layer. Run your nail across the scratch, and if it catches, the groove goes deeper than any polish will ever reach.

Dr. Wack is clear about this itself: scratches down to the primer can only be fixed with a paint repair at a body shop. The target is car-wash swirls, wipe marks, the branch scratch from the farm-track exit, the bag buckle on the driver's door. Anything you can't feel with your fingernail is a job for the tube.

Two surfaces are completely off limits: matte paint and matte wraps. A polish whose purpose is gloss does exactly the wrong thing there, and you won't get it back. Nor does the product belong on chrome-plated plastic parts like badges, or on soft unpainted plastics in the cabin, such as the dashboard and door cards.

The headlight deserves a line of its own, because two things get mixed up there. The lens is a type-approved polycarbonate part with a thin factory protective layer — the plastic's sunscreen. Take that off with sandpaper and you've modified an approved part, which the roadworthiness inspection treats as a major defect.

A polish that just brightens the yellowed film on top of that layer is a different thing, and that's exactly what Dr. Wack approves the headlight for. If the protective layer is gone over a large area and the lens feels chalky, though, this tube won't bring it back to new either. Then it's a specialist with a fresh sealing layer, or a new part.

And a limit that isn't on any label: if the spot is still visible after the second pass, stop. Every further pass takes clear coat, and you won't get that back. A faintly visible scratch is a smaller problem than a panel with too-thin clear coat that'll be the first to start chalking in a few years.

So the split is simple. If three specific spots bug you, grab A1 "Kratzer Polish". If the whole paint looks dull and grey, an all-over polish with carnauba protection is the right tool — 500 ml, meant for the whole car.

50 millilitres is enough for spots. Not for panels.

Fifty millilitres sit on the shelf next to a 500 millilitre all-over polish from the same range. The factor of ten isn't cost-cutting, it's a statement of what the tube is for.

It's for drivers who have their car under control and see an annoyance in two or three places: the wipe marks around the fuel flap, the pale line on the wing, the cloudy headlight. If you want to refresh the entire paint, 50 ml is the wrong size. That's what the big packs in our car polishes are for.

The tube's standing in the market speaks for itself, without any fuss. AUTO BILD test winner 2022; auto motor und sport already had it in first place out of eight back in 2014, with 122 out of 150 points. For a product that's had the same single job for years, that's the more interesting number than any superlative.

As long as the groove sits in the clear coat, it's a cosmetic problem and fixable by hand. Once it goes through base coat and primer, it becomes a substance problem, and the tube is out of its depth. That's why it makes sense to keep it in the car, not on the shelf: a spot you treat the day it happens is the easiest case this product will ever get.

And the point no tube tells you: after buffing off, that exact spot is the only one on the car with no protective film. Silicone-free also means nothing is left behind — no wax, no polymer, nothing.

The freshly exposed clear coat picks up road film faster than the paint around it, and the spot soon stands out again, this time because it's duller than the rest of the door. In the scene, a combo like that is called an all-in-one polish, AIO for short. The abrasives come from the same family used to finish precision mirrors for space research — high-purity aluminium oxide particles with a very tight grain size distribution.

The trick is that these grains don't stay hard. They're so-called diminishing abrasives: under pressure and friction heat, they break at built-in fracture points into smaller and smaller fragments. Think of sandpaper that goes from 1500 to 5000 grit while you're working. For you, that means cut and finish are in the same product — no switching bottles or pads.

The jump in gloss is measured, not claimed. In a series of reflectometer readings on weathered test paint, the gloss level rose from 71.0 to 88.6 in a single pass. Factory-fresh clear coat sits at 90 to 95. So with one bottle and one sponge, you get within a few points of a new car.

The grey haze is measurably cut in half. The haze value — the diffuse scatter from thousands of micro-scratches — dropped from 42.4 to 22.5 in the same measurement. You'll notice it in the reflection: sharp edges again instead of a milky rim. On the pro scale, the cut sits at roughly 2.5 to 3.5 out of 10 — enough for swirls, not enough for deep scratches.

Approved on gloss wraps and scratch-resistant clear coat too. Metallic, solid, so-called nano paints, highly cross-linked scratch-resistant clear coats and gloss wraps are all on the approval list — the last one is rare in this price bracket. According to Dr. Wack, the carnauba film protects for up to three months.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: The most common mistake isn't the amount, it's the area. If you polish the whole bonnet in one go, you'll find a dusty crust at the first corner while the last one is still wet and shiny. Work in sections of about half a square metre and start each new pass at the wet edge. Above 25 °C or in the sun, halve the sections again. What we see day-to-day, that's the difference between five and twenty minutes of buffing off.

Pressure does the polishing. Not dwell time.

Unlike a cleaner, it's not time doing the work here, it's your hand. Only pressure breaks the abrasive grains down and gets the polishing going in the first place.

Decon comes first, or the sponge just grinds the dirt in. Wash, dry, take off fallout and tar, and if the paint still feels gritty after washing, clay it. A single embedded iron particle under the sponge drags round pigtails into the clear coat. That damage is worse than any scratch you were trying to polish out.

Then shake the bottle and put the product on the dry polishing sponge, not on the paint. Work in small circles in a cross-hatch and keep the sponge well loaded, or the grains run without a lubricating film. Dr. Wack puts it unusually bluntly: the more pressure, the better the result.

Then let it flash off briefly — don't let it cure. Remove with microfibre, never with a cotton cloth or cotton wool; both push the wax residue around rather than picking it up. Flip the cloth often, or you'll spread on the second half what you picked up on the first.

The sponge has more say in this than most people expect. A soft applicator mostly spreads wax; a medium-firm foam transfers the pressure all the way to the grains. If one pass leaves you disappointed, it's often not that you polished too little, but that you worked through a pad that's too soft.

A dual-action machine with a medium foam pad gets you further than working by hand, because the machine holds constant pressure for twenty minutes, which no arm can. By hand you replace speed with muscle, and the result slides a little from removed towards filled. What we see day-to-day, a compact car by hand uses about a third of the 500 ml bottle.

The carnauba fills what the grains don't remove

Part of the visible scratch removal is masking. The wax settles into valleys the abrasives haven't levelled and takes away their shadow.

Carnauba is the hardest known natural wax, with a melting point of 82 to 86 °C, and it refracts light unusually strongly. That's exactly what makes it a good filler: whatever it fills no longer casts a shadow, and the paint looks smoother than it would after abrasion alone. Day to day, that means a deep, warm gloss on dark colours — and up to three months of durability without sealing separately.

That's not a con, it's how every all-in-one polish is built. You just need to know what happens when the wax goes. After a few washes with a strong alkaline pre-wash, the medium-depth scratch is back. That's where the harsh reviews you read about AIO products come from: the user expected removed and got filled.

Two limits are absolute. On matte paint and matte wraps, the grains polish spots smooth and the wax fills them — you end up with greasy-looking shiny patches that only a respray will fix. And chrome trim and rough, unpainted plastics stay off limits, because the white particles settle into the pores there and are hard to get back out.

The bottle says solvent-free, and that's more precise than it sounds. It means no aggressive aromatic solvents — the kind that pull plasticisers out of a wrap and leave it brittle and yellowed. There is a low-odour, de-aromatised carrier oil in there, otherwise the paste would dry out on the paint instantly and the grains would have no lubricating film. For you, that means you can work a gloss wrap on the roof exactly like the panel next to it.

That gives you a clear split. If you want to take swirls, haze and car-wash scratches off the whole body and have the protection come along for the ride, Speed Polish is the right call. If one single deep scratch bothers you, or the result has to hold up after ten washes, that's a job for one of the more abrasive polishes in the A1 range, which work without wax and don't bring any protection with them.

Polishing twice a year is plenty for this paint

For A1 "Speed Polish", Dr. Wack recommends two to three passes a year. That's spot on for the driver who looks after their car but doesn't want to block out a two-stage afternoon.

We get questions about it in two waves: in April, once winter's grit and road salt have been washed off, and at the end of August, when the low evening sun makes the swirls visible in the first place. That matches search behaviour — interest in polishing a car peaks in August and is currently running about 18 percent above the yearly average.

So the 500 ml covers those two to three passes a year several times over. Who it's not the right pick for: anyone who wants everything at once, once a year — weathered bumper, cloudy headlight and deep scratches on the door edge. That takes individual steps and usually a machine. And anyone already running a ceramic coating — you'd polish it right off.

That the maths works out for the normal case was confirmed by GTÜ in 2017, comparing nine car polishes: Speed Polish came out as test winner, specifically praised for its protection, the deep gloss with visibly refreshed colour and residue-free buffing. Exactly the three points where an AIO product usually cuts corners.

If you want to stretch the durability, follow up the buff-off with a spray wax. This pure sealant has no abrasive content and extends protection from the three-month window towards six. It doesn't attack the freshly laid carnauba — it sits on top of it.

And here's the bit no label tells you: getting from 71.0 to 88.6 gloss costs you an afternoon, a bottle and a sponge. The last few points up to new-car level at 90 to 95 cost a machine, three pads, two products and a whole day. Dr. Wack makes a product in Baar-Ebenhausen that nails the first part and honestly bows out of the second. The same abrasives are otherwise used to level silicon wafers in microchip production. There, the result isn't decided by how hard a grain is, but by how identical it is to the grain next to it.

That's exactly what sets it apart from an ordinary polish. Size, shape and hardness are identical across the whole batch, and as you work, the grains break down evenly into the nano range. In a normal compound the grain size varies, and the few oversized outliers are what put in the new fine scratches you then have to cover up again. For you, that means what you see after buffing off is the actual result, not a layer sitting on top of it.

A grain that doesn't go rogue. Dr. Wack uses synthetic abrasives like the ones used to polish wafers in microchip manufacturing, and explicitly targets holograms and car-wash scratches without re-marring. The cutting stage finishes down to a gloss on its own, so you don't switch to a second, finer compound. Anything deeper than a finishing polish removes stays out of scope — the clear coat on top is only 30 to 60 microns thick.

3rd place out of nine, measured after degreasing. In 2020, KÜS and AUTO BILD tested nine premium polishes on black panels, three quarters of the surface artificially weathered down to a gloss level of 60, the untreated quarter at 90. Application was five grams of product, 1.5 kilograms of pressure and five passes in a cross-hatch. Before the final rating, the lab degreased with isopropanol so waxes couldn't hide any scratches. The result: 238 out of 300 points.

Three months of protection instead of bare paint. In the same step, carnauba wax lays a film on the freshly polished paint, which Dr. Wack rates at up to three months. The manufacturer recommends two to three applications a year, and the 250 ml covers that several times over. Day to day, that means you don't have to seal the same afternoon just so the panel isn't left unprotected.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: Don't judge the result in daylight. Diffuse light irons out holograms and haze visually — exactly the defects you're polishing against. Grab an LED spot light, hold it low across the panel and leave a palm-sized patch unpolished next to it. Only that comparison tells you whether the first pass was enough. We often see a second pass even though the first one had already done the job, and every pass costs 0.5 to 5 microns of clear coat that you'll never get back.

With ULTIMA, the whole door is one section

The instructions call for entire body panels in one go, and that's not about convenience — it follows directly from how this polish works.

Washing comes first. Unwashed paint carries loose grit, and it travels under the sponge across the whole panel. If the paint still feels gritty after drying, or there are little brown specks in the white, take the fallout off first. Then work in the shade on a cool panel, never on hot paint in the sun.

The 250 ml bottle comes with a microfibre cloth; the sponge isn't included. Apply to the dry polishing sponge, not the paint, and keep the sponge loaded for the whole section. If it runs dry, the grain loses its lubricating film and each pass turns into friction with no effect. On pressure, the manufacturer is blunter than most: more pressure going in, better result.

Then comes the step that sets this polish apart from most. The film has to dry completely before the cloth goes over it, and according to Dr. Wack it then comes off as easily as dusting. Since there's no wet edge that can flash off too early, your working unit isn't half a square metre but the whole panel: door, wing, bonnet in one go.

In the scene, a polish that's meant to dry on raises a few eyebrows. That objection mixes up two different things. The cutting happens under your hand, while you're rubbing; the drying time afterwards just makes removal easy. Which of the two did the work on your car is answered by the spot-light test above, on your own paint.

What ULTIMA doesn't remove, a machine won't either

With this polish, a machine polisher is a speed tool, not a power tool. It covers more area per hour, but it won't take a single extra micron out of the clear coat.

The ceiling is in the grain, not in your arm. Depending on technique, a finishing polish removes around 0.5 to 5 microns of clear coat, a cutting compound on a rotary 3 to 8. ULTIMA belongs in the first group, even applied by machine. Anything deeper stays put and needs its own cutting step, a suitable pad and, if in doubt, a paint depth gauge.

On the machine, one rule applies that barely matters by hand: work controlled, small sections, no heat build-up. Heat under the pad is the fastest route to exactly the holograms you're polishing against. On dark metallic, a rotary spinning too fast inflicts the damage the product is then supposed to take away again.

Two surfaces are off limits, full stop. On matte paint and matte wraps, grain and wax make the surface glossy, and there that's a write-off, not a work in progress. Chrome-plated plastic parts and badges are also left out. If polish ends up in rough, unpainted plastic, get it back out with a trim dressing before it dries white in there.

That leaves the forum accusation that whatever disappears here is just filled and comes back after a few washes. Worth taking seriously, because there's carnauba in the product. The lab provides the solid counter-check: KÜS degreases the panels before the final rating to strip off waxes and silicones, and after that the result still landed in 3rd place out of nine.

That gives you a clear split. If the paint is basically sound and it's holograms, haze and car-wash scratches that bug you, ULTIMA is the tool. If the whole car is dull and the price per litre matters, reach for the 500 ml all-over polish from the A1 range of polishes and paint cleaners. And if the scratch goes through the clear coat, neither will help — that's a job for the body shop.

Dark paint is where ULTIMA shows what it's built for

Holograms and haze, the milky film over the reflection, show up first on black and dark metallic — and that's exactly where removed and covered-up go their separate ways.

It's no coincidence that KÜS tests on black panels. Three quarters of the surface had been weathered down to a gloss level of 60, while the untreated quarter sat at 90 — a contrast you simply don't see on light silver. If you drive a dark car, though, you see it every Sunday on the driveway.

That makes A1 "ULTIMA Show & Shine Polish" the product for paint that's basically fine but missing the last few percent: after a machine session that left holograms in direct light, before a sale, before a meet, after a winter of weekly car washes. If you want to rescue a completely weathered car once a year, though, you need a dedicated cutting step and a machine.

Per litre, the 250 ml costs a good three times as much as the 500 ml all-over polish from the same range. What you get for that isn't more product, it's a different grain. Dr. Wack recommends two to three passes a year, and the bottle covers that several times over — as long as you remove it with a deep-pile premium microfibre cloth and don't top up, because a saturated cloth won't pick anything up.

And here's the point no label does the maths on: your clear coat is a bank account you can only withdraw from. There are 30 to 60 microns in it, and if you want to keep its protection, you shouldn't take more than 10 to 15 of them off over the car's entire life.

At 0.5 to 5 microns per pass, that's around thirty polishes or three, depending on how aggressive you go. So the interesting question isn't which polish removes the most, but which removes the least and still delivers. That's exactly the logic behind the uniform grains: a grain that doesn't go rogue doesn't force you to level the same panel a second time.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0800/3272/7375/files/dr-wack-a1-ultima-show-und-shine-polish-politur.png?v=1787867381
meguiars-scratchx
ScratchX Scratch Remover

Meguiar's ScratchX — the scratch remover for fine scratches, wipe marks and paint damage without a polishing machine

Frequently asked: “My car has fine scratches from washing, branches and wipe marks that drive me up the wall. Scratches that catch your fingernail are often too deep for hand polishing and are worth having a paint shop look at. For shallow scratches that are only there visually, ScratchX usually gets you very good to complete results.

Why ScratchX is the right scratch remover for most everyday situations

Everyday scratches come from all over: automatic car washes, branches and hedges on narrow lanes, the wrong cleaning cloths, bird and insect mess left to bake on the paint too long, or just your sleeve as you climb in. The good news: the vast majority of these scratches sit in the clear coat — the colour underneath is untouched. And scratches that sit in the clear coat can be worked out with a polish.

The difference between a proper product like ScratchX and a no-name scratch remover is the quality of the abrasive. Coarse or uneven particles leave new, fine scratches as you polish — hairline swirls — which just move the problem around instead of fixing it. The micro-fine abrasive in ScratchX is tuned to shave off the damaged clear coat and leave an even, smooth, clear surface behind.

On dark paint — black, dark blue, dark red — this matters even more. Under light, wipe marks and hairline swirls jump out on dark colours. ScratchX polishes them away and leaves an even, mirror-like surface, without the milky haze that cheap products tend to leave.

Another plus with ScratchX is how efficient it is on small spots. Setting up a polishing machine and going through the whole routine for a single scratch or a small patch of swirls is overkill. ScratchX is the right tool for targeted spot work — quick, precise, no fuss.

Step by step — how to remove scratches properly with ScratchX

Prep: clean and dry the panel thoroughly. No waxes or dressings on the surface — they get in the way of the product's cut. Best used straight after a proper hand wash or a wipe-down with quick detailer. Work in the shade or under cloud — direct sun flashes the product off too fast.

Step 1 — lay it down: put a pea-sized blob of ScratchX on a soft foam applicator or a folded microfibre cloth. Get the product straight onto the scratch or the damaged spot; don't spread it over a big area.

Step 2 — work it in: use medium to firm pressure with circular or straight passes. For scratches that run in one direction, some detailers like to polish across the scratch to level it evenly. Stick to an area about the size of your palm — don't take on too much at once. Ten to twenty seconds of active polishing per spot is usually enough.

Step 3 — wipe off and check: buff the residue off with a clean microfibre cloth and check the result under raking light or direct light. If the scratch still shows, go again. Deep scratches can take several passes. Scratches still visible after three or four passes probably run deeper than the clear coat and can't be fully sorted with a paint polish alone.

Step 4 — follow up: after a ScratchX pass the paint is left with no protection. Lay down a coat of wax, paint sealant or a ceramic coating to protect the treated spot for the long run. It makes the result last a lot longer and shields the freshly polished clear coat from the next hit.

Where it fits — what ScratchX is good for in detail

Fine scratches and hairline swirls: the classic swirl marks from the car wash, fine marring from the wrong cloths or scratches from branches are ScratchX's home turf. These almost always sit in the clear coat and can be worked out fully with the product.

Wipe marks and holograms: these come from circular buffing with the wrong cloths or from polishes with abrasives that are too coarse. ScratchX levels them out and brings back an even, clear surface.

Water spots: chalky water spots left on the paint after it dries can often be taken out with ScratchX — especially once they've etched lightly into the clear coat and plain water or quick detailer won't shift them any more.

Light oxidation: on older cars that have sat in the sun for a long time, the clear coat can go dull and chalky — that's oxidation. ScratchX can knock back light to medium oxidation and bring some of the clear coat's smoothness back. The kit pairs a patented drill pad with an effective scratch remover, and together they get you pro-level results at home. It packs everything you need to sort light scratches and dullness quickly: the patented 100 mm Scratch Eraser pad with backing plate fits any standard drill chuck and turns an ordinary drill into a proper polishing tool. Paired with the included scratch remover ScratchX 2.0 and a quality microfibre cloth, the kit is ready to go straight away — no separate DA orbital polisher to buy, no pricey extra pads, no learning curve on complex machines. Set the drill to low-to-medium speed (800–1200 rpm) and let the pad do the work. Too much pressure or too high a speed can overheat delicate clear coat and leave holograms — gentle and steady is what gets you there. Keep the pad flat on the paint and move it slow and even to avoid a local heat spot.

What the QUIK Eraser Kit fixes — and when it's the right call

Light scratches happen fast: a key at the door handle, a branch brushing past as you park, a stone chip while overtaking, or rough brushes at the car wash — those are the usual causes of clear-coat scratches that don't reach the base coat but still catch the light and nag at you. That's exactly the kind of paint and clear-coat damage the QUIK Eraser Kit is built for.

The Scratch Eraser pad is made from a specially developed foam that, together with ScratchX 2.0, generates enough bite to remove surface scratches from the clear coat completely, or knock them right back, without reworking the whole surrounding panel. That's the key difference from full machine polishing: the 100 mm pad is small enough to zero in on single trouble spots. It saves product, saves time and leaves the good paint around it alone.

What the kit can't do: scratches that go through the clear coat into the base coat and show up white, metallic or coloured are too deep for the QUIK Eraser Kit. If the mark is a different colour from the paint around it, it's gone through the clear coat — and only proper paint repair or a matching touch-up pen will help there. If you're not sure, grab a loupe and good side light first to judge how deep it runs. A simple check: drag a fingernail across the scratch — if the nail catches, the damage is deeper than the clear coat.

The kit is ideal for water-spot dullness, fine wash marring, parking scuffs on bumpers and door edges, and general paint dullness from UV. On these everyday cases it reliably brings a visible improvement — often even a full clean-up of the mark when you work it properly.

Step by step — how to use it

Prepping the paint is the most important step before you polish. Wash the car and let it dry fully. Then degrease the affected area with a lint-free cloth and a little isopropanol (70%). That helps the polish key in and stops leftover wax, silicone residue or grit from cutting your results or leaving fresh scratches. Mask off nearby chrome trim, rubber seals and plastic trim with masking tape, since ScratchX 2.0 can leave stubborn white residue on those surfaces that's a pain to remove.

Clip the backing plate onto the pad and lock it into the drill chuck. Tighten the chuck key firmly so the pad can't wander. Put a pea-sized blob of ScratchX 2.0 straight onto the pad — not onto the paint. Set the drill to a low speed (800–1000 rpm) if it adjusts. Place the pad on the paint before you switch the drill on — never bring a spinning pad down onto the paint, that instantly marks it. Hit the trigger and work across the damaged area with light pressure in even, overlapping passes. Don't dwell in one spot — keep it moving.

After 2–3 passes, switch off and lift the pad from the paint before the spin stops. Wipe away the polish residue with the included microfibre cloth and check the result under direct light. Deeper scratches may need another pass with slightly more pressure. Once you're done, we'd seal the polished spot with a car wax or a paint sealant. That protects the freshly smoothed clear coat from UV and the weather, and the result lasts a lot longer.

Product comparison & buying advice — QUIK Eraser Kit vs. ScratchX alone

The difference between the QUIK Eraser Scratch Kit and the standalone ScratchX scratch remover comes down to the tool: ScratchX on its own is made for hand use and does a good job on very light surface scratches. The QUIK Eraser Kit adds the drill pad to the same polish — and lifts the effect a lot. The spinning pad brings heat and even cut that a hand pass physically can't match. By machine the result is usually clearly better and more even, especially on medium scratches that need more bite.

If you already own a drill, the QUIK Eraser Kit sets you up perfectly without having to invest in a full DA orbital polisher. That's a real price advantage: a DA polisher typically runs €80 to €200, while the QUIK Eraser Kit at €35.90 with everything included is a far cheaper way in. For the odd touch-up on single spots, the kit is the smart, practical choice.

If you polish more often and over bigger areas, or regularly detail several cars, it's worth investing in a DA orbital polisher down the line. The SOFT BUFF DA Foam Finishing Disc polishing pad is the matching add-on pad for an orbital polisher when you want regular details with a more professional finish. For beginners and occasional users, though, the QUIK Eraser Kit is the ideal first pick — low barrier to entry, instant result, minimal outlay.

Common mistakes — and how to dodge them from the start

The most common mistake with the QUIK Eraser Kit is too much pressure paired with too high a speed. Both overheat the clear coat locally, which can cause so-called holograms (swirl marks) or, worst case, burn through into the base coat. The rule of thumb: light pressure, low speed, let the pad do the work — not your arm. Stick to that and even with little experience you'll get clean results without knock-on damage.

Another common slip is working too dry. ScratchX 2.0 has to stay as a wet enough film on the pad to act as both lubricant and abrasive. Let the pad go too dry and friction climbs out of control — the clear coat can heat up locally and the cut turns uneven. When it needs it, just add a little more ScratchX and carry on. The right balance of product and speed clicks into place intuitively after two or three goes.

Last thing: only ever work on spots you've cleaned thoroughly first. Grit and sand between the pad and the paint act like sandpaper and cut fresh scratches right next to the one you just repaired — an especially annoying mistake, because it shows up straight away. Clean paint is the absolute must for a job that works. Don't skip that step and you've already ticked the most important box for a professional result.

Use cases — where the kit earns its keep

The QUIK Eraser Kit proves itself in three common everyday situations. First, fresh car-wash scratches: a lot of automatic washes leave fine marring in the clear coat that shows up as a shimmering web in sunlight. The kit clears these evenly spread fine marks reliably when the affected area is limited — the bonnet, roof or boot lid, say. Second, parking scuffs on bumpers and doors: the typical light streak damage from tight spaces or a neighbour's careless door swing is the classic use case. The 100 mm pad is small enough to target single scratches or short scratch lines without needlessly polishing everything around them. Third, general paint dullness on older cars: cars that have stood outside for years without regular care often show dull, oxidised clear-coat areas. Here the kit can take the first steps of a paint refresh and lift the gloss visibly — as prep for a full polish or seal.

In all of these cases the same holds: the QUIK Eraser Kit is no substitute for a full machine polish on badly weathered paint, but it's the most efficient tool for targeted quick fixes in daily life. Use it properly and you'll get visible results in no time, with no expertise and no expensive gear. As a companion to regular washing and sealing, the QUIK Eraser Kit keeps a car's paint in far better shape over the years — small scratches get treated the moment they appear, so they never reach the state that would call for a big full polish. That's the kit's real strength: not just repair, but preventive paint care day-to-day.

Common questions about the Meguiar's QUIK Eraser Scratch Kit

<details>

What drill speed should I use?

800–1200 rpm on a low setting is the sweet spot. After the compound step, always wipe down with the Quik Detailer before you lay on the Carnauba wax — that pulls off compound residue that would otherwise cloud the wax's gloss.

What's in the Paint Restoration Kit — the seven products in detail

The BRILLIANT SOLUTIONS Paint Restoration Kit follows the classic detailing principle: Wash → Decontaminate → Correct → Protect. Each of these four phases is covered by at least one product.

The Gold Class Car Wash Shampoo (473 ml) opens the workflow with a thorough, paint-safe pre-clean. The Gold Class shampoo has a lightly concentrated formula with plenty of lubricity — meaning the wash mitt glides across the surface instead of grinding dirt particles into the paint. That matters especially before the clay treatment, since the clay bar works far more effectively and safely on a surface free of leftover dirt.

The Smooth Surface Clay Bar is the product a lot of drivers have never heard of — and whose absence from the process is the difference between a good and an excellent result. The clay bar is a soft, putty-like synthetic material that physically pulls embedded contaminants out as you glide it over the wet paint. Telling whether your paint needs decontamination is easy: after washing, run a clean plastic bag over the surface. Feels rough? Then there are contaminants stuck in the paint — and the clay bar is the fix.

The Ultimate Compound (473 ml) is the most powerful product in the set. Meguiar's Ultimate Compound is an all-in-one compound with variable abrasives that break down progressively as you polish — meaning it handles both the aggressive first pass on heavily dulled paint and the final smoothing on light correction. It works even more efficiently with a DA polisher, but it also works by hand with the supplied Soft Foam Applicator Pad. Important: after the compound the paint has to be cleaned — compound residue is white and powdery and must be fully removed before the wax goes on.

The Quik Detailer (473 ml) takes on that cleaning job between compound and wax. It's a light, sprayable detailing product that lifts compound residue while brightening the surface a touch and adding lubricity for the next step. On top of that, once the restoration is done, the Quik Detailer works as a quick refresher and maintenance spray between the big detailing sessions.

The Gold Class Carnauba Plus (473 ml) closes the restoration with a final protection and gloss treatment. The Gold Class Carnauba wax contains natural T1-grade carnauba wax and synthetic boosters — the combination delivers both a deep, warm-golden glow and a tough protective layer that keeps UV, rain and bird droppings off the freshly corrected paint. On paint corrected by the compound, the carnauba boosts the depth of gloss especially hard, because the surface is now fully level and reflective.

Two Soft Foam Applicator Pads and two Supreme Shine Microfiber Towels round out the set with the tools you need — one each for compound and wax, one each for buffing off.

Paint restoration step by step with the Paint Restoration Kit

The right sequence gets you the most out of the result and spares the paint unnecessary stress. Here's the full workflow with the BRILLIANT SOLUTIONS Paint Restoration Kit:

Phase 1 — Wash. Wash the car thoroughly with the Gold Class Car Wash Shampoo. Two-bucket method recommended. Then dry it fully — the clay bar should only work on wet paint or paint misted with Quik Detailer, never on a dry surface.

Phase 2 — Clay bar decontamination. Flatten the clay bar to hand size. Mist the paint section by section with Quik Detailer and run the clay bar over the surface in straight, parallel passes — no circular motions. You'll feel and hear resistance at the start that fades as you work — that's the contamination coming off. Refold the clay bar regularly to bring a clean side to the front. Wipe down with a clean towel after each section.

A key note on doing this by hand: Meguiar's has optimised the Ultimate Compound for both hand and machine work. Doing it by hand takes a bit more patience and more arm pressure to get the same result as a DA polisher. But the by-hand result is convincing too — on paint with light to medium oxidation you'll notice the difference after the very first panel. The white powder that shows up as you buff off is the sign the compound has done its job: it's holding the removed clear-coat dust and the dissolved contaminants.

Phase 3 — Compound polish. Apply the Ultimate Compound to one section with the Soft Foam Applicator Pad. Work it in by hand in circular motions — 8–10 circles per section — until the compound turns clear and slightly dry. Buff off with the microfibre towel and follow up with Quik Detailer. The kit is the smarter call for anyone doing a full paint restoration once or seasonally, without building up a big stash of products.

Vs. professional detailing: A professional paint restoration at a detailing studio runs 200–600 EUR depending on the car. The Paint Restoration Kit lets you do that process yourself — with a result that, with careful work and the right workflow, comes close to a professional one. The difference is in the time it takes and the learning curve on your first go.

Vs. one-step polish: Products like the ONE-STEP Paint Care 3-in-1 combine cleaning, polishing and protection in a single step — faster, but less deep than the multi-stage approach of the Paint Restoration Kit. If you only want a light refresh and don't want to run the full restoration, the one-step has you covered. If you want to genuinely bring weathered paint back, you need the multi-stage approach of this kit.

An honest note on the kit's limits: The Ultimate Compound can't create deep paint or new clear coat. It removes damage in the existing clear coat down to a certain depth. With scratches your fingernail catches on, the damage runs deeper than the compound can correct — here only professional paint correction with filler or a respray will help. The kit solves the cases that hit roughly 80–90% of neglected paint. For the remaining 10–20% you need professional help.

Buying advice — who is the Meguiar's BRILLIANT SOLUTIONS Paint Restoration Kit worth it for?

The Meguiar's BRILLIANT SOLUTIONS Paint Restoration Kit is worth recommending to anyone who wants to breathe new life into neglected or weathered paint with their own hands. It's the right product when you've taken over a car whose paint looks dull and lifeless despite regular washing. Or when your own car has picked up that typical oxidative haze over a few winters that ordinary car care no longer shifts.

The kit is also a smart choice as a season-opener in spring — after the first thorough wash post-winter, the paint is often in its most critical state of the year, and that's exactly when a full restoration run pays off most. The paint is clean, cool and ready for restoration.

The Detailing1 tip for anyone with a dual-action polisher: the kit works by hand, but with a DA polisher and the matching foam pad you halve the time and the compound result improves noticeably. If you already own a polisher, the BRILLIANT SOLUTIONS Paint Restoration Kit is a top base of products for your spring care.

One last tip for the best results: always run the Paint Restoration Kit on a cool, cloudy day or in the shade. In direct sun the compound flashes off so fast that buffing gets tricky and residue can stay in the paint. The ideal condition is an overcast spring day at 15–20°C — that keeps all the products fluid long enough to work evenly and efficiently. Under those conditions the Meguiar's BRILLIANT SOLUTIONS Paint Restoration Kit is a highly effective tool that turns dull, lifeless paint back into a reflective, good-looking finish — the result you deserve when you put in the work. With the right tools, the right order and a free half-day, you'll create a result that puts a smile on your face every time you look at your car — promise.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0800/3272/7375/files/Meguiars-BRILLIANT-SOLUTIONS-Paint-Restoration-Kit-Pflegeset-1-Set_PS1.jpg?v=1775375990
meguiars-ultimate-paint-care-kit
ULTIMATE Paint Care Kit Care Set

Meguiar's ULTIMATE Paint Care Kit — the paint care kit for professional three-step paint care from compound to wax

Frequently asked: "After years of daily driving my paint looks dull, it's got fine scratches and just doesn't shine the way it used to. All three steps are matched to each other in one set and together deliver a result that none of the single products manages on its own. For 79.90 euros you get a complete, professionally designed paint care system that lays the groundwork for exceptional results — from the first cutting pass to the protective wax finish.

Complete three-step system — compound, polish and wax in one kit: The ULTIMATE Paint Care Kit takes the "what do I actually need?" question off the table — the kit has everything you need for full paint care from the ground up. The ULTIMATE Compound pulls out deeper scratches, oxidation and holograms. The ULTIMATE Polish then brings out the high gloss and clears the fine polishing marks the compound leaves behind. The ULTIMATE Wax locks in the result and gives the paint its long-lasting, deep shimmer. Three matched products, one logical sequence, one clear result.

Matched ULTIMATE formula — each product sets up the next step: The products in the ULTIMATE Paint Care Kit aren't thrown together at random — they're matched chemically and mechanically. The ULTIMATE Compound is formulated to leave a clean surface where the ULTIMATE Polish can do its best work. The polish in turn leaves a bonded, smooth surface where the ULTIMATE Wax grips best and gives maximum protection. That matching is the main advantage of a system kit over randomly mixing different makers and product lines.

By hand or by machine — flexible for any detailer: All three products in the kit go on by hand or with a machine polisher. For beginners without a machine, working by hand is a practical and effective way in — the ULTIMATE Compound and the ULTIMATE Polish in particular show clear results even by hand. If you already own a machine, the kit gets you even more efficient results in less time. That makes the kit a good fit for beginners and experienced hobby detailers alike.

Day-to-day from Detailing1: Only use the ULTIMATE Compound on the spots that actually need it — where scratches, holograms or oxidation are visible. Don't compound the whole body as a matter of course when only a few panels are the problem. Always run the polish in step two across the entire surface so the gloss is even. Then the wax as a final protective layer over the whole body — including panels you didn't polish. Between each step, check the surface for product residue and wipe it clean before you start the next one. A common slip-up: laying wax over polish you haven't wiped off — that gives you patchy results.

What's inside the ULTIMATE line — the technology behind Compound, Polish and Wax

The ULTIMATE Paint Care Kit builds on three products from the ULTIMATE line, which Meguiar's positions as its flagship series for demanding consumers. Every product in this line stands for the best formula Meguiar's has developed for that particular step — and combining all three gives you a result that beats the sum of its parts.

The ULTIMATE Compound is a cutting polish for correcting paint surfaces. Its formula contains micro-abrasives that remove fine to medium scratches, oxidation and paint stains without being overly aggressive. What makes the ULTIMATE Compound special is the size and spread of those abrasives: they're small enough to get clear results on normally correctable paint, yet coarse enough to work effectively even by hand. The result after the compound: a surface free of visible scratches and oxidation, but not yet with the final high gloss.

The ULTIMATE Polish is the step that turns a good correction into an exceptional result. As a finish polish with the finest abrasives, it clears the very fine marks the compound leaves — the characteristic fine holograms you see under direct light after a compound pass — and at the same time brings out that deep mirror gloss. The ULTIMATE Polish is formulated so it also works as a standalone polish on lightly stressed paint, where a compound would be too aggressive.

The ULTIMATE Wax — the finishing product in the set — is a synthetic, polymer-based wax. It protects freshly polished paint from UV, water and light soiling while giving it that warm, deep glow good carnauba waxes deliver. The synthetic base of the ULTIMATE Wax makes it more durable than pure natural waxes and easier to apply — with no white residue creeping onto rubber and plastic trim, which is a problem with some wax formulas.

Step by step — how to put the ULTIMATE Paint Care Kit to professional use

Prep: wash, dry and degrease the car thoroughly before you touch the kit. Surface dirt, tree sap, bird droppings and bug residue all have to be gone before you start with the compound — cutting on a dirty surface raises the risk of deeper scratches from trapped particles. A clay bar pass after washing and before polishing is worth it, to pull out embedded fallout and coating residue and get the surface glass-smooth.

Step 1 — ULTIMATE Compound: put a pea-sized amount of compound on the applicator. Work the paint in sections of roughly 50 × 50 cm — not the whole bonnet at once, but panel by panel. Work with even pressure in straight-line movements until the compound turns clear and starts to dry off. Then wipe it off with a clean microfibre cloth and check the section in the light for any remaining scratches. Areas with stubborn scratches can take a second pass.

Step 2 — ULTIMATE Polish: on a clean, residue-free surface (the compound residue has to be fully wiped off), load the applicator with a small amount of ULTIMATE Polish. Spread it evenly across the whole surface — including panels you didn't compound — and work it in with even pressure in straight lines. Let the polish sit until it's lightly dried off, then wipe it away with a fresh microfibre cloth. The result after step 2: mirror-smooth, evenly glossy paint.

Step 3 — ULTIMATE Wax: spread the wax thin and even over the paint with a clean, soft applicator pad. A thin coat matters more than a thick one — too much wax leaves residue that's hard to buff off and shines unevenly. Let the wax cure for a few minutes (the touch test: a fingerprint on the surface dries off fully without smearing), then buff it off in a cross-hatch pattern with a soft microfibre cloth. The result: lasting gloss and protected paint.

Which paint conditions is the ULTIMATE Paint Care Kit suited to?

The kit is dialled in for everyday paint — cars that have been driven for several years and show the usual wear: fine wash-line scratches, dull spots from the sun, light oxidation, holograms from careless cleaning. Those are exactly the kinds of damage the kit tackles in the right order and visibly improves.

For very badly damaged paint — deep stone chips, clearly visible scratches from sharp objects, colour damage from local impact — a paint care kit isn't a complete fix, since that sort of damage calls for a respray or at least a professional spot repair. That said, the kit can still noticeably improve the overall condition of badly damaged paint and lift individual areas visually.

New cars and very lightly stressed paint benefit most from the second and third steps — polish and wax — and usually don't need a compound pass. That makes the paint care kit a "refresh and protect" programme for newer cars too, when you skip the compound step.

For regulars who refresh their car once a year in spring: running the full three-step programme once a year makes sure the paint not only looks good but stays protected long-term against the cumulative damage from UV, rain and everyday use. The wax is the key protective layer here, and it has to be renewed regularly — even when no compound or polish pass is needed.

Product comparison & buying advice — ULTIMATE Paint Care Kit vs. the single products

Compared with buying the three products separately — ULTIMATE Compound, ULTIMATE Polish and ULTIMATE Wax on their own — the ULTIMATE Paint Care Kit gives you a price advantage and the peace of mind of matched products. Mix single products from different makers or lines and you risk them not being properly matched — one brand's compound can leave residue a different polish doesn't react well to. In the system kit, that matching is guaranteed.

Against cheaper combo sets without the ULTIMATE formula, the ULTIMATE Paint Care Kit shows its strength in the quality of the individual products. The ULTIMATE line is Meguiar's best consumer formulation — not an entry-level product that just about does the job, but the best you can get short of professional machine polishing.
