It raises the car from below on crossed lifting arms, with no post next to the door. Short-rise models bring the wheels up to about one metre for working seated; double scissor lifts go up to standing height. Which one fits depends on the work you want to do underneath.

Scissor lifts are vehicle lifts whose pads sit on a scissor mechanism raised by a hydraulic cylinder. The car either rests on rubber blocks at its lifting points or stands on its wheels on runways. Because nothing stands beside the car, doors, sills and wheels stay freely accessible. Lifting capacity, ceiling height and foundations are covered in the Car lifts overview; this page is about the scissor design and its variants.

About one metre of lift at 110 mm drive-over height. According to the manufacturer, the Weber-Werke "KHB-1000E" Weber-Profi-Serie lifts 1,000 mm and sits 110 mm high when lowered. That drive-over height is what your car has to roll over to get onto the lift – and so the limit for low cars.

2,230 mm lifting height at 330 mm installation depth. The Weber-Werke double scissor lift "DSH-3500B" Weber Expert Series sits in a recess in the floor and, according to the data sheet, rises up to 2,230 mm. You stand upright under the car, and when lowered it leaves a flat floor with no posts and no ramp.

Pick-up length from 1,640 to 2,040 mm. On the DSH-3500B, extensions that pull out on both sides reach even widely spaced lifting points – for cars and small vans, according to the manufacturer. This figure decides whether your car sits securely on the lift at all, so it belongs on the shopping list before lifting capacity.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: In user reports on short-rise scissor lifts, we see a problem no data sheet catches. On minibuses and vans, the lifting points sit at the very end of the usable length, and some owners build their own extensions from steel or wood. Before you buy, measure the distance between the lifting points on your vehicle and compare it with the lift's pick-up length. If it doesn't fit, a manufacturer-approved adapter helps, if one exists for your model – or a different lift design. Never a homemade fix.

A scissor lift raises from below – nothing stands next to the door

A scissor lift carries the car from below on lifting arms that open up like a pair of scissors, leaving all the space to the left and right of the car free.

The lift comes from a hydraulic cylinder that pushes the crossed arms apart. Right at the bottom, when the arms are almost flat, it needs the most force. The KHB-1000E and Miami Plus solve this with a linkage at the cylinder that converts the pressure at the low end into lift. For you, that means the force is there exactly where low cars get onto the lift – in the flattest position.

There are two ways of carrying the car. Short-rise scissor lifts pick the car up at the lifting points from the owner's manual, usually on rubber blocks, with the wheels hanging free. On double scissor lifts, each scissor carries its own runway: the DSH-3500B picks the car up at its lifting points with extendable arms, while the Weber-Werke "DSH-5000" Weber Expert Series is a drive-on scissor lift where the car stands on its wheels until a wheel-free jack lifts an axle. In both cases the doors open fully, because there's no post in the way.

You'll also hear the term scissor platform. What's meant here is the scissor lift for cars, not the access platform that takes people up a building's facade. It only shares the principle with the scissor jack from your car's toolkit; wheel changes and axle stands are covered under Car jack.

According to Ahrefs, search volume for scissor lifts in Germany is now 14.9 percent higher than five years ago, with the yearly peak in October and November. That's when work on the car moves into the garage, and wheel changes, underbody care and wheel arch cleaning are on the list.

The lift height decides whether you sit or stand

A scissor lift's rise sets your working position: short-rise models lift about one metre for working seated, double scissor lifts go up about two metres – standing height.

In this range, short-rise means 1,000 mm. That's the figure Weber-Werke gives for the KHB-1000E and Wematik on its own website for the Miami Plus. At that height you sit on a creeper stool in front of the wheel, with brakes and wheel bearings at eye level, and the sill too. You look under the car, but you don't stand under it.

According to the manufacturers, the KHB-1000E and Miami Plus run on 230 volts with a 16 amp slow-blow fuse. In plain terms: no three-phase cable into the garage – a 230-volt socket with the right fuse is enough.

Full-rise on the DSH-3500B means a lifting height of 2,230 mm. The double scissor lift runs on 400-volt three-phase power at 2.6 kW. Two separate scissor sections, not rigidly linked, each carry one runway. For that you need ceiling height, and the maths with car height and clearance is in Car lifts.

There's no sliding scale in between. A short-rise scissor lift can't go higher than its arms reach, and a recessed double scissor lift doesn't roll aside just because it's flat when lowered. You make the decision once – when you buy.

Speed differs too. For the Miami Plus, Wematik quotes 25 seconds to lift and 15 to lower; the DSH-3500B takes about 60 seconds to full height according to its data sheet. That's not a flaw of the double scissor – it's the longer travel: more than twice the rise takes time.

Mobile scissor lifts move with you, flush-mounted ones stay put

Scissor lifts come mobile on wheels, surface-mounted with drive-on ramps, and flush-mounted in a recess in the concrete; the design determines how clear the floor stays afterwards.

The mobile models stand on the floor. The KHB-1000E comes with a mobile kit, the Miami Plus has a built-in wheel set. After the job the lift rolls to the wall and the garage belongs to the car again. You need a level floor for the lift to sit properly on – something users running mobile scissor lifts stress as well.

Surface-mounted, i.e. installed on top of the floor, the DSH-5000 for example works with optional drive-on ramps. At the rear end, the ramps double as a roll-off stop. The price is an edge every wheel has to roll over, and the lift stays visible on the floor.

Flush-mounted, often called in-ground, the DSH-3500B sits in a recess 330 mm deep and lies level with the floor when lowered. The manual requires at least 1,000 mm clearance to the wall at the side. When lowered there's no edge; on the other hand, the recess in the concrete is permanent and doesn't come with you when you move.

Mobile doesn't mean light. Wematik gives 550 kg for the Miami Plus; the DSH-3500B weighs 910 kg according to its data sheet. You move a mobile short-rise scissor lift with its wheel set or mobile kit, not one-handed, and the first time, lining it up under the car takes longer than you'd think. That's part of the deal: after a few goes, position and blocks are spot on first time.

Installation also raises the air question. The KHB-1000E releases its safety latches electrically and needs no air connection; for the Miami Plus, Wematik specifies an electromagnetic release. The DSH-3500B and DSH-5000 operate their latches pneumatically. If there's no compressor in your garage, that point alone decides between the models.

In the parking position, safety latches carry the load – not oil pressure alone

A scissor lift is only as safe as its pick-up and its locking, because in the parking position the load rests on mechanical safety latches, not just on the hydraulic cylinder.

Safety latches are steel teeth that drop into a ratchet bar as the lift rises. When you lower into the parking position, the lift settles onto them and no longer hangs on oil pressure. For you, that means even a leaking line won't let the car sink in the parking position. A user on a Porsche forum describes how his Wematik scissor lift first rises a little before lowering so the latches can clear, and sees that as a plus. So with latch-secured scissor lifts, plan in a bit of headroom at the top.

The double scissor lifts also monitor synchronisation. The electronics compare the height of both scissor sections and keep them level. In practice: the car doesn't tip to one side because one runway moves faster. On the DSH-3500B and DSH-5000, hydraulic safety and overload valves in the cylinders come on top.

The KHB-1000E relies on a 24-volt dead-man control. The lift only moves while you hold the button; let go and it stops. Day to day, that means your hand is the last brake. According to Weber-Werke, the lift was tested dynamically at 115 and statically at 150 percent of the permitted load.

The rest is down to you as the user. Pick-up blocks go on the points from the owner's manual, and worn rubber pads get replaced. After a short lift, a shake test checks that the car sits firmly, and nobody is under the car while it's going up or down. If the lift sinks overnight outside the parking position or a platform runs crooked, that's a job for the service team; which oil goes in the tank is covered under Hydraulic oil.

Short-rise for sitting, double scissor for standing and alignment

The range runs from mobile short-rise scissor lifts for work at the wheel to double scissor lifts for working standing up and for wheel alignment.

The Wematik "Miami Plus" Basic is the mobile short-rise scissor lift, and according to the product title it comes with 5 litres of hydraulic oil. The product page lists a manual safety system and 24-volt limit switches, but no dimensions; the roughly 1,000 mm rise comes from the manufacturer's website. Check lifting height and power supply against the manufacturer's data sheet before you buy.

According to the manufacturer, the Weber-Werke "KHB-1000E" Weber-Profi-Serie carries cars and small vans up to 3,000 kg and raises and lowers at the push of a button. Drive-over height, mobile kit and the air-free release are covered further up.

The "DSH-3500B" Weber Expert Series is the flush-mounted double scissor lift for working standing up, with an LED status display and a control unit you can position where you like. The "DSH-5000" Weber Expert Series is built for wheel alignment: a wheel-free jack in the runway lifts the axle, while removable turntable recesses at the front and slip plates at the rear take the measuring equipment.

The models come from Weber-Werke and Wematik. The brand pages Weber-Werke and Wematik show what else these manufacturers offer in lifting gear and fluids.

Short-rise isn't a small double scissor lift

If you work on wheels, brakes, sills and wheel arches, short-rise serves you well; if you want to work standing on the exhaust or gearbox, you need a lot more rise or a different design.

If your work happens at the wheel – wheel care, brakes, wheel arch cleaning and sill protection – a short-rise scissor lift like the KHB-1000E or the Miami Plus is enough. If you want to stand upright under the car and treat the underbody, the double scissor DSH-3500B is the way to go. If wheel alignment is part of it, go for the DSH-5000.

One limit applies to every scissor lift: the middle of the underbody sits above the pads or the scissor cross. Whether the exhaust, prop shaft or transmission tunnel stay reachable depends on the car and on the pick-up. In forums, some users report gearbox jobs on a short-rise scissor lift, while others say that's barely doable. If you regularly need the centre of the car clear, take a look at 2-post lifts.

If you don't have room for two posts and one side of the car can be taken up by the post, 1-post lifts are worth a look. If you change wheels twice a year and lift nothing else, you don't need a lift at all – a trolley jack with axle stands will do.

For detailing, a short-rise scissor lift is an obvious choice. Twin Busch explicitly names vehicle detailing as a use for its TWS3-10E short-rise scissor lift. Rinsing out wheel arches, cleaning wheels from the inside, sealing sills: it all happens at one metre, and the doors open fully when it's the interior's turn.

Where an unanswered height question leads is shown by an enquiry to our customer service: a buyer cancelled because he only realised after ordering that he needed at least 160 centimetres of lifting height. A short-rise scissor lift lifts about 100. That's why you need to answer that question before you buy. Short-rise isn't a small double scissor lift – it's a different working position: you sit at the wheel instead of standing under the car. Know that beforehand, and you only buy once.
