In most cases they're not broken, just blocked. Cleaners containing surfactants and salts dry out in the nozzle bore and crystallise there – and that bore is narrower than the eye of a sewing needle. After the job, draw clean water into the head and pump it empty two or three times until only water comes out. A head that's already spitting goes nozzle-down into warm water for ten minutes and almost always runs normally again afterwards.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/blockquote\u003e\n\n\u003chr\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eWhat a spray bottle is really made of\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eA spray bottle has five parts, and any one of them can be the first to give up: bottle, dip tube, valve, seal and nozzle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe bottle is usually HDPE, high-density polyethylene. The plastic chains are packed so tightly that hardly any foreign molecule fits between them. In practice, you'll notice that the bottle still feels solid in your hand after months of diluted wheel cleaner and doesn't go soft or cloudy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe dip tube is the system's drinking straw. It has to reach the bottom of the bottle, or the head starts sucking air as soon as the level drops below half. Trim it to length once on a new bottle, and from then on even the last drop reaches the panel as a clean mist rather than a splutter.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eInside the head sits a small check ball. On the return stroke it closes the line so pressure builds up in front of the nozzle, instead of letting the liquid run back into the bottle. In practice that means the first pull after putting the bottle down sprays straight away, instead of clicking uselessly two or three times until the line fills again.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe seal is an elastomer ring of just a few millimetres, yet it's the most expensive part if it doesn't suit the contents. It holds the pressure between piston and cylinder, and it's also the only spot where your cleaner is in permanent contact with a soft material that can swell. That's exactly where it's decided whether the bottle lasts a season or years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eYou twist the nozzle between cone and jet. It practically doesn't wear out, as long as nothing dries inside it. A nozzle that no longer atomises is almost never faulty – it's full of crystallised cleaner, which dissolves in warm water within a few minutes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eMist, jet and what happens in between\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe nozzle setting isn't about comfort – it sets droplet size, reach and consumption, and with them how cleanly the product works.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eMist forms when the liquid is forced through a narrow bore against a swirl insert and breaks up into a flat cone. The droplets are fine enough to merge into a continuous film the moment they land. For you that means even coverage with no runs – ideal for quick detailer on painted panels and for plastic care in the interior.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe jet focuses the same amount on one spot. It reaches further, hits precisely and puts noticeably more liquid on a small area. Its place is wheel arches, sills, door shuts and the back of the wheel spokes – anywhere you'd otherwise have to reach in with your arm or half your upper body.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe in-between setting is the most common reason for drips on the paint. Half open, the nozzle doesn't atomise fully; some of the liquid leaves as a coarse drop and runs straight down any vertical panel. Turn the nozzle deliberately all the way – fully to cone or fully to jet – and the problem goes away.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eOne special design solves the angle problem. Heads with 360-degree intake work at any angle, even upside down, because the dip tube moves inside or the system is pre-pressurised. Under the seat, at the top of the wheel arch and on the inside of the tailgate, that's the difference between two pulls and three attempts with a twisted wrist.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThen there's the output per stroke. A big output sounds good at first but costs you effort: mist one side of a car with pre-cleaner and you'll pull the trigger several hundred times in no time. A smooth-running head with a medium output is the nicer choice by the end of the afternoon – and for really large areas, there's other kit anyway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eWhy the seal and dip tube give up first\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe cheapest bottle gets expensive when its seal swells up after two weeks of concentrate and the head just spits.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eSeals are made from elastomers – cross-linked rubber polymers. Common ones are NBR, a nitrile rubber for water-based and oily media, EPDM for alkaline cleaners and FKM, the fluoroelastomer for aggressive solvents. Think of the network as a fine-meshed sieve that small molecules can lodge themselves in. How tight that sieve is decides what gets in.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIf the medium doesn't suit the material, solvent molecules work their way between the chains and push them apart. The ring gets thicker, softer and loses its springback. The piston then no longer runs tight in the cylinder, sucks air and stops building pressure. First you see a worse spray pattern, then drips, then nothing at all.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe dip tube goes through the same thing in slow motion. A softened tube kinks where it meets the head, sucks air at the kink and can't be straightened by hand. It fails later than the seal – and for the same reason.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIn practice, the range splits roughly into thirds. Water-based dilutions of shampoo, all-purpose cleaner and quick detailer are no problem for any decent bottle. Alkaline cleaners and acidic wheel cleaners need a head that's rated for them. Anything with a high solvent content – tar remover, panel wipe or isopropanol – belongs in a bottle with an explicitly solvent-resistant seal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThat leads to the advice we give most often: one bottle per product, filled permanently, rather than one universal bottle that sees something different every week. It costs you a few extra bottles once and saves you spare heads, spoiled leftovers and chasing down a spray pattern that got worse for no obvious reason.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch3\u003eLabelling is a safety issue, not a tidiness issue\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eAs soon as you decant from a canister into a spray bottle, the contents leave their original labelling behind – and the responsibility passes to you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eLabelling follows the CLP Regulation, the European rules for classifying and labelling chemicals. You see it as the red-bordered hazard pictograms with the H and P statements next to them. In a commercial setting, labelling decanted mixtures is mandatory; at home it's simply common sense, because otherwise nobody but you knows what's in the bottle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe reason is how easy they are to mix up. An all-purpose cleaner diluted 1:20, a glass cleaner and plain water look identical in a clear bottle. Grabbing the wrong one gets noticed at the latest when an alkaline cleaner lands on a polished aluminium wheel or freshly sealed paint, where it has no business being.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThree details are enough for a usable label: product name, dilution and fill date. Writing the dilution on as well sounds over the top – until you're standing in spring in front of a bottle from autumn with no idea whether it's 1:10 or 1:50. Concentrates and ready-mixed dilutions are best kept dark and frost-free, because UV light breaks down surfactants and dyes, and a frozen emulsion separates when it thaws and won't become uniform again.
