It measures 7.6 centimetres, and anything bigger gets tight in almost every car.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe numbers are quick to tell. Typical cup holders run between 6.4 and 8.9 centimetres, with around eight the most common. The 769 is 8.6 centimetres, the litre bottle 9.5, the big 1.9-litre one 12.2. For these three, YETI itself puts a no in its own size chart. Cup holder means 532 millilitres. Footwell, bag or folding table means as big as the day is long.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe maker draws two limits on top. Hot drinks are approved up to 85 degrees for this lid, and filter coffee often comes out of the machine hotter: two minutes with the lid off is enough. Fizzy drinks don't belong in any Rambler bottle. And empty, the 769 weighs around 620 grams, the big one over a kilo. For a hike this is the wrong bottle, and none of the four sizes fits a bike cage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eOne point comes up regularly in user forums: the lid starts to smell after a few weeks. The cause is almost always the same, two gaskets that have never been taken out. There's one above and one below the thread, and both pull off. Compared with a straw lid, the insulated bottle with Chug Cap has the edge here, with far fewer nooks.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eOn the finish, it's worth being honest. YETI says the baked-on colour won't peel, and that matches what we see on our own bottles. That still doesn't make it scratch-proof, and after a drop onto concrete you can tell. Eighteen colours in the small size, twenty-two in the 769, eleven in the big one, from Stainless through Navy and King Crab to Olive Camo. Anyone who stands the bottle next to a car they picked themselves picks the colour too, which is why you rarely see the same one twice at a meet.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eIn practice, most people end up buying two. The 532 for the drive over with coffee, because it fits the cup holder, and the litre or the big one for the rest of the day with water, when the sun is beating down on the paint from eleven and nobody can be bothered to walk to the drinks stand anymore.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWho it's for: anyone who spends two hours polishing one wing and then doesn't want a bottle that looks like a building-site find after one winter. Who it isn't for: light packers, cyclists, anyone who drinks while driving. The rest of the \u003ca href=\"\/collections\/yeti\"\u003erange of insulated drinkware\u003c\/a\u003e follows the same maths: buy once instead of three times.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe tip nobody prints on the packaging: all Rambler bottle lids fit all Rambler bottles. It still picks up scratches when it slides across concrete.\u003c\/li\u003e\n  \u003cli\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e18\/8 stainless steel with a five-year warranty.\u003c\/strong\u003e 18 percent chromium builds a hair-thin protective layer on the surface that rebuilds itself after every scratch. In practice: the bottle will not rust even after a week sitting in the boot with water in it. For you that means a few degrees more after several hours.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe body still does its job. In a comparison of eight insulated bottles the Rambler came first after twelve hours and was still better than the test average after 24 — measured with the closed screw cap, though, not the straw. If you need maximum cold across a full day, go for the screw cap; the caps in the Rambler line swap between each other and fit the same bottle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThere are four things this bottle cannot do. \u003cstrong\u003eNo hot drinks:\u003c\/strong\u003e YETI puts the ceiling for the straw cap at 49 °C. Hot liquid expands, and a straw feeds it straight into your mouth without you being able to check the temperature the way you would from an open cup. \u003cstrong\u003eNo carbonation:\u003c\/strong\u003e escaping CO₂ builds pressure the valve and drinking channel were never designed for — the cap then either sticks or pops off when you open it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eNothing with pulp\u003c\/strong\u003e and no storing food: fibres clog the straw and hang up in the valve. \u003cstrong\u003eNot pack-safe:\u003c\/strong\u003e the cap is tight while closed. The flip lid can still open when it gets knocked about, so in a travel bag the bottle goes upright rather than buried in your clothes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThen there is the weight. Empty, the 18 oz weighs 510 g and the 26 oz 560 g — about three times an uninsulated plastic bottle of the same size. For a rucksack on a long day out that is a real argument against it. The folding table, the blanket in the boot, the cloth that's only for glass, the tumbler.
