They come from wiping, when a particle gets caught between cloth and clear coat and gets dragged across the panel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThe clear coat on a modern production car is about forty micrometres thick, roughly half a human hair. A grain of quartz from road dust is harder than that layer. Anything pushed across it leaves a mark you'll spot in raking light as a fine spider's web.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eThis is exactly where microfibre works differently from cotton. The fibres are split during manufacturing, turning a round thread into a star-shaped profile with channels running between the points. In plain terms: the grain drops into those channels and stays put instead of riding along on the fibre surface. You can tell because a good cloth looks grey inside and clean outside after a wipe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eA cheap cloth can't do that. With a high polyester share and coarse splitting the channels stay shallow, the dirt sits on top, and the cloth turns into sandpaper with a soft grip. The difference costs a few euros a piece and decides hours of polishing come spring.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eWe often get questions about fine scratches that only show up after a sealant goes on. Nine times out of ten the product wasn't to blame — it was the cloth used to buff off the excess. If you've already got holograms or car-wash swirls in the clear coat, there's no way around a polish. Around 300 means a thin, short-pile cloth for polish and sealant residue. Short pile glides, picks up little and works with precision. Long pile lifts particles up off the paint and holds liquid. Sewn-in bands are stiff and sit right under your fingers. Edgeless means the edge is ultrasonically or laser cut, so it's part of the weave itself. Twisted Loop twists long loops into cords and drinks like mad, classic plush is soft and does everything, a waffle weave pulls water off glass without streaking. Wax, silicone oil and traces of plastic care travel via the cloth onto the glass and leave a film that stands out as a haze in backlight and comes back with the first rain. A glass cloth must never touch care products. Four boxes or bags will do. That very coat is what makes bath towels cuddly, and on microfibre it seals off the fine channels that are meant to take up the dirt. Powder never dissolves fully and settles between the loops. Sixty degrees is right for wash mitts and drying towels, forty is plenty for thin paint cloths. Polyester is a plastic; too much heat melts the fibre tips together and robs the cloth of its grip for good. Dryer sheets are out for the same reason as fabric softener. Manufacturing leaves loose fibre ends and sizing residue in the weave that end up, on the first wipe, exactly where you don't want them. When a cloth goes hard, snags threads or only pushes water around, its days on paint are done. It's not rubbish, mind: we move cloths like that straight over to the wheels, into the door shuts or under the bonnet.
