All-purpose cleaner / APC for your car – and why dilution is everything

What is an all-purpose cleaner for cars? A surfactant concentrate that, depending on dilution, works everywhere from the engine bay to the door cards. One canister, four dilution steps, a dozen jobs. At Detailing1, alkaline concentrates and ready-to-use spray bottles sit side by side in the range.

All-purpose cleaner / APC products for cars – APC is detailer shorthand for All Purpose Cleaner – are alkaline surfactant concentrates that saponify organic grime and keep it suspended until you rinse it away. They don't replace a dedicated cleaner for wheels, paint or leather. They cover the broad middle ground that would otherwise take three bottles on the shelf, and the dilution decides how hard they bite.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: Most questions we get about all-purpose cleaners aren't about the product – they're about dosing. Mix a concentrate too strong, assuming more active ingredient means cleaner, and you get two problems at once. The solution dries faster than it works and leaves pale alkaline rings on painted trim that only polishing will shift. And the excess surfactant stays on the surface, pulls moisture from the air and grabs fresh dust with it. Always start one step weaker than you think, work on a cold surface and rinse thoroughly. Going again costs three minutes. A damaged part costs the part.

One concentrate, lots of jobs – and dosing makes the call

APC stands for All Purpose Cleaner, and the name is more honest than it sounds. One product works in twenty places on the car, because you set its strength yourself before every job.

The base is surfactants and alkaline builders. Alkalis saponify grease and oil, making them water-soluble, and the surfactants wrap around the loosened dirt so it stays suspended in the solution instead of drying back on. You'll notice it when the grime runs off as you rinse instead of smearing across the surface.

The pH value tells you how aggressive that saponification is. Koch-Chemie Green Star „Gs" sits at pH 12.5 to 13 as a concentrate – right at the top of what's acceptable on vehicle materials at all. Diluted to 1:50, the same chemical lands in a range where you can wipe down the boot shelf with it.

That's the big difference to any ready-to-use cleaner. It's set up for one job at the factory and can't be dialled up or down. With a concentrate, the measuring cup decides whether you end up with an engine bay cleaner or a gentle wipe-down solution for the centre console.

The maths works out fast. At a medium dilution, one litre of concentrate gives you ten litres of working solution, and a lot more at 1:50. Think of the canister as a year's supply rather than a bottle for next Saturday, and the numbers look completely different.

A detail nobody sees on the shelf: good concentrates carry an aluminium corrosion inhibitor in the formula, an additive that lays a wafer-thin protective film on bare metal. Green Star has it, and it's the reason the diluted concentrate is safe on painted aluminium parts it would attack neat.

The dilution ladder, from heavy oil to a dust run

Four numbers cover almost everything on a car that needs cleaning. 1:5, 1:10, 1:20 and 1:50 – and each step has its fixed place in the workflow.

1:5 is the heavy step. Oil-soaked floor coverings, an engine bay nobody has touched in years, underbody areas with baked-in road film. This is about amounts of grease where a milder solution only takes the shine off and leaves the film behind.

1:10 is the step you'll use most. An engine bay in normal condition, bug shells on the front and mirrors, wheel arches, wheels as a pre-clean before the actual wheel cleaner. With GYEON Q²M APC, though, 1:10 is the recommendation for interior and fabric, because that concentrate is built differently. Two manufacturers, two scales. Go by the number on the label, not the one from the forum.

1:20 is the step for exterior plastic, rubber seals and sills. What sits there is road film rather than grease, and the materials are more sensitive. Plasticisers migrate out a little with every pass that's too harsh, and once something has gone brittle, it doesn't come back.

1:50 is the maintenance step. Door sills, cubbies, boot liner, rubber mats. The solution feels almost like water, and that's the point. It takes dust and light greasy film with it, without you having to go over everything again with clean water afterwards.

A worked example makes the ladder tangible. At 1:10, one litre of concentrate gives you ten litres of working solution; at 1:50 it's fifty-one. A 500 ml spray bottle for an interior wipe-down uses around ten millilitres of that. Work with a measuring cup rather than by eye, and after the first season you'll see how little has actually gone from the container.

Two moves decide how the mix turns out. Water in the bottle first, then concentrate – otherwise the mix foams over while you're filling. And use up the finished solution within 24 hours, because the surfactants lose punch once diluted. So only mix what you'll actually get through in that session.

Aluminium, leather and displays are the three limits

Three materials in a car can't handle an alkaline all-purpose cleaner, whatever the dilution. Anodised aluminium, pigmented leather and coated displays.

Anodised aluminium carries an artificially created oxide layer that protects the metal and holds the colour. Alkalis attack exactly that layer. You see the result straight away: dull, whitish, blotchy patches on trim strips, roof rails or pedal covers that won't polish out. The corrosion inhibitor in the concentrate protects painted aluminium, not anodised.

Automotive leather has a pigmented top coat – a thin layer of colour and protection on the hide. Surfactants attack it, and you'll notice because the towel picks up colour. After that the spot is open-pored and soaks up every bit of dirt deeper. For interior surfaces with a top coat, reach for pH-balanced products from Interior cleaner.

Displays and anti-glare surfaces are the third case. The coating is only a few microns thick and reacts to alkalis just as it does to alcohol. Once it's been etched, a milky haze stays behind that you'll see against the light on every drive. This is a job for a pH-neutral product, and the mist goes on the towel, not on the part.

Two more limits come from everyday use. Ceramic coatings on paint lose some of their beading when they meet alkaline cleaners, so keep the APC off coated surfaces. And warm surfaces from about 40 degrees make the solution dry on before it works. What's left are limescale rings on painted trim.

What an all-purpose cleaner simply won't dissolve is anything that isn't water-soluble. Tar, tree sap and adhesive residue from wraps or badges are chemically different and need a solvent. Cold surface, short dwell time, rinse thoroughly

The workflow is the same with every all-purpose cleaner, and the order matters more than the product choice. Stick to it, and you'll regularly get away with a weaker dilution than you expected.

Surface cold and in the shade. An engine block after a drive, a panel in the midday sun or a wheel after a motorway run carry enough residual heat to make the solution dry on. Dried-on alkaline solution doesn't clean any more – it just leaves rings.

Spray from the bottom up, rinse from the top down. If the solution runs over a panel that's still dry, it leaves a haze there that later shows up as streaks. Rinsing the other way round carries the loosened dirt down and off the car.

Dwell time is two to three minutes, no longer. In that time the saponification is done. Anything beyond that adds nothing and only raises the risk of the surface drying. A foam sprayer keeps the solution clinging longer than a hand pump and spreads it more evenly over large areas.

Agitation backs up the chemistry – it doesn't replace it. A soft brush works the foam into textured plastics and seal folds, where a flat towel just skims over the top. If a grey haze remains after wiping, it's almost always that agitation missing, not cleaning power.

In the engine bay there's one extra step that's on no label. Cover the intake, control units and open connectors before spraying. The cleaner itself is rarely the problem – the water jet when rinsing is. Then rinse with a soft stream rather than high pressure, and the water stays where it belongs.

The step almost everyone skips is the final rinse with clean water. Alkaline residue pulls moisture from the air and with it fresh dust, and after two days the surface looks dull again. On the exterior, go straight into the wash; the products for that are in Car wash.

Koch-Chemie Allround Surface Cleaner „Asc" All-Purpose Cleaner is its counterpart from the same house. Ready to use, pH-neutral, designed for plastic, glass, leather and displays in the interior. No measuring cup, no mixing chart, 15 to 30 seconds' dwell time, then wipe off with a microfibre cloth. It doesn't replace Green Star – it takes over where Green Star has to stop.

GYEON Q²M APC All-Purpose Cleaner tackles the scale differently. 1:10 for interior and fabric, 1:5 for rubber and plastic, 1:2 up to neat for the engine bay and wheel arches. If you already work with Q²M products, you stay in a familiar setup and don't mix its dilution logic with a second scale.

Which all-purpose cleaner suits your car

Which product fits comes down to two questions. How often do you clean, and how sensitive are the surfaces in front of you? That gives you three clear cases.

One car, two to four cleans a year, mostly interior: the ready-to-use Allround Surface Cleaner „Asc" is the pragmatic answer here. At that volume, a concentrate's price advantage never kicks in, and you'd tip out mixed leftovers after 24 hours anyway.

Several cars, engine bays, wheel arches, a bug-splattered front: the concentrate is the answer. At 1:10, Green Star „Gs" covers most of that work, and for the interior maintenance run you set the same chemical to 1:50. One container, the whole year.

If you already work within the GYEON system, or want a concentrate that runs in the interior without rethinking anything, Q²M APC is a solid choice. Its scale is milder, but for the heavy exterior work you'll need the neat step.

From what we see day-to-day, the most solid setup is an alkaline concentrate plus a pH-neutral ready-to-use product. The concentrate handles everything outside and in the footwells, the ready-to-use product everything coated. That way you're never guessing on any surface – and with all-purpose cleaners, the guessing is the expensive part.

One last point, because it often gets lost. An all-purpose cleaner takes away; it doesn't put anything back. After every pass the surface is bare and unprotected, and on rubber and exterior plastic that means plasticiser loss over the years. Plan the protection step into the same session.
