Car wash in three stages, without scratches in your paint

How do you wash a car properly? In three stages: pre-cleaner loosens the heavy dirt touchless, snow foam soaks the rest and rinses it off, and only then does the wash mitt come in with shampoo. Every step you skip turns into an abrasive under the mitt. At Detailing1 you'll find the right product for each of the three stages.

Car wash isn't one single job but a sequence that removes dirt in stages. The reason is physics: grains of sand and brake dust are harder than clear coat. Drag them across the panel with a wash mitt and you create exactly the fine scratches you later see as swirls in the sunlight. So pre-cleaner and foam have one job: remove as much dirt as possible before anything touches the paint.

• The pre-wash saves more than it costs. Take the heavy dirt off first and you'll need less pressure with the mitt later. It's exactly that pressure that makes polishing necessary over the years.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: We often see people washing in blazing sun because the weather happens to be right. On a heated panel, shampoo and water dry faster than you can rinse, leaving limescale spots that only an acidic cleaner will shift. Wash in the shade or early in the morning, and always finish one panel before moving on to the next. If the surface starts drying before you've rinsed, grab the hose in between — better one rinse too many than removing water spots afterwards.

Sand is harder than clear coat, and that changes everything

The whole car wash routine follows one single physical fact: the particles on the paint are harder than the paint itself. Quartz sand from road dust sits at around 7 on the Mohs scale, clear coat well below that. Every grain dragged across the panel under pressure leaves a trail.

Individually, these trails are invisible, but they add up. What you see as a circular pattern in the sunlight after two years is tens of thousands of fine scratches scattering the light instead of reflecting it. In the scene they're called swirls, and they come almost exclusively from washing and drying — not from outside influences.

That's where the order comes from. Every step before the wash mitt is there to cut down the number of particles. A pre-cleaner chemically breaks down the greasy film of dirt, the pressure washer rinses it away, and the foam soaks the rest and carries it down as it runs off. What that means for you: by the time the mitt touches the panel, there's far less left on it that can scratch.

The second lever is pressure. A deep-pile wash mitt takes particles deep into its fibres and keeps them away from the paint surface. A sponge with a flat face pushes them along in front of it instead. That's exactly why the classic yellow petrol-station sponge is a tool that no longer has any place in detailing.

The third lever is the water itself. Hard tap water leaves limescale when it dries, and that bakes into the paint texture when the sun is on it. In areas with hard water, it pays to do a final rinse with soft or deionised water — that saves you the limescale remover and polishing out baked-on spots later.

Pre-cleaner works before anything touches the paint

The pre-wash is the step most people skip — and the one with the biggest impact on the state of your paint.

An alkaline pre-cleaner chemically breaks down the film of road grime, oil and bug residue. Alkalis saponify grease, turning it water-soluble — what was stuck on before now runs off with the water. The Koch-Chemie Vorreiniger B „Vb" Pre-Cleaner is our best seller at this stage.

For bugs and organic residue, a specialist product is worth it. Bug splatter contains protein and practically bakes into the clear coat in the sun. The Koch-Chemie Pre-Foam efficient „Pfe" Pre-Cleaner & Insect Remover covers both in one step.

Dwell time is the deciding factor and is regularly underestimated. Dwell time depends on product, dilution and surface; never go over the maximum time stated. Whatever gets dissolved in this phase doesn't have to be removed mechanically later.

What matters is that the pre-cleaner doesn't dry on. On a sun-warmed panel that can happen faster than the intended dwell time, and dried-on alkalis leave marks. If in doubt, work in smaller sections and mist it again in between.

For heavily soiled cars after winter, there are acidic pre-cleaners that also dissolve limescale and inorganic deposits. They don't belong on polished wheels or in your regular routine — used for spot jobs they're the right tool, but used all the time they take a toll on seals and bare metal parts.

Snow foam soaks — it isn't a shampoo

Foam is often mistaken for a wash product you just don't spread by hand. It actually has a different job.

Snow foam is built for cling time, not lubricity. The foam is meant to stick to the vertical panel for as long as possible so the surfactants have time to work, and to take the loosened dirt with it as it slowly runs off. A car shampoo, on the other hand, is optimised for lubricity. It's meant to form a film between wash mitt and paint that the mitt glides over instead of rubbing. That takes different surfactants and usually additives that lower the surface tension.

So you can't sensibly swap the two product types. Shampoo in a foam lance makes a foam that collapses in seconds and doesn't soak anything. Snow foam in the wash bucket gives you little slick film and therefore more friction under the mitt.

For heavily soiled cars there are intensive foams with a higher active content, like the Koch-Chemie Active Foam „Af" Intensive Foam. They work harder and so aren't meant for the weekly routine on a sealed car.

There are two ways to make foam, with different results. A foam lance on a pressure washer mixes in air under pressure and gives you the thick, long-standing foam you know from videos. A pump foam sprayer works without a pressure washer, makes a slightly looser foam and is plenty for most cars. The right kit is under Spraying & foaming.

By the way, the practical benefit of foam lies less in its cleaning power than in time. While the foam works, you can do the wheels and door shuts — the routine doesn't get longer, it gets more efficient.

Two buckets and a deep-pile mitt

The actual hand wash comes last and is the step with the highest scratch risk. Two techniques cut that risk significantly.

The two-bucket method separates wash water and rinse water. One bucket holds the shampoo solution, the second clean water. After every panel, the mitt gets rinsed in the clean bucket before it goes back into the solution. That way the dirt it's picked up stays in the rinse bucket instead of landing back on the paint on the next pass.

A grid insert at the bottom of the bucket boosts the effect. The rinsed-out sand sinks underneath and doesn't get stirred up again when you dunk the mitt. It's a detail that sounds like overkill and shows in the result over the years.

The order on the car follows the dirt: roof first, then glass, then the upper sides, and sills and rear bumper last. The lower area carries the most road grime, and whatever ends up in the mitt there shouldn't make it back onto the roof.

When drying, technique matters just as much. A drying towel is laid flat and drawn off, not rubbed. Rub, and you'll create the very scratches in this phase that you avoided while washing. Suitable towels are under Cloths & microfibre.

A second mitt for the lower panels is the simplest upgrade there is in this category. Sills, rear bumper and the area behind the wheels carry the heaviest dirt, and what the mitt picks up there is the last thing you want on the bonnet. Two mitts cost little and save you the polish that would otherwise be due after two years. Suitable models are under Washing gloves.

Beading alone doesn't reliably tell you whether a sealant is still intact. Dirt and deposits can mask the water repellency; only after cleaning can you judge whether it's time for Sealing & polishing.

The range for pre-wash, foam and hand wash

The all-purpose concentrates lead on sales and cover more than just washing. The Green Star „Gs" gets picked for different cleaning jobs depending on the task and the approved surface. The Multi-Purpose Cleaner „Mzr" is intended for alkali-resistant interior and specialist surfaces, not as a blanket product for pre-wash or wheels. For beginners, that's the most economical way into the range.

With shampoos, the choice runs from the classic Koch-Chemie Autoshampoo „As" Car Shampoo to maintenance shampoos with a sealant component like the Ceramic Effect Shampoo „Ces", which lays down a thin protective layer with every wash.

City car, high-mileage driver and sealed car

How much effort makes sense depends on how dirty the car is and the state of the paint — not the calendar.

For a city car with moderate dirt, a two-stage routine is enough: foam on, let it soak, rinse off, then a hand wash with shampoo. A separate pre-wash with pre-cleaner only pays off here after the car's been standing for a long time or in winter.

For a high-mileage driver doing a lot of motorway, the pre-wash is a must. Bug residue on the front end and mirrors contains protein and won't come off after two days of sun without soaking. This is where a bug remover in the first stage pays off straight away.

For a sealed or ceramic-coated car, the product choice changes. Strongly alkaline pre-cleaners eat into the coating, and an aggressive shampoo cuts months off its lifespan. Here, pH-neutral shampoos and mild foams belong in the routine, and the strong stuff only comes out once a year.

For a car coming out of winter, the full routine is due once, including an acidic pre-cleaner against salt residue and a check for iron fallout afterwards. Whatever turns up there leads on to Paint preparation. The spring wash is the more important of the two anyway, because road salt keeps working in seams and wheel arches longer than any summer grime.

And if spot contamination is still there after washing — tar, tree sap, adhesive residue — those are jobs for Cleaning products with the right specialists, not for more pressure on the wash mitt. Dissolved on the spot, they cost you two minutes; worked on mechanically, they cost you clear coat.
