The Rambler Jug 2.0 is YETI's big standing jug for coffee and iced water at the folding table next to the car. The cap docks magnetically on the lid instead of ending up in the gravel. Nothing fizzy, nothing for storage, and it won't fit a cup holder either.

The YETI Rambler Jug 2.0 is YETI's insulated jug for people who brew coffee once in the morning and still want to pour it hot by the car at lunchtime. 1.9 or 3.8 litres, 18/8 stainless steel, a solid handle with a rubber grip, four colours. It stands next to the car, never in it. You fill it once and for the rest of the day you only touch it to pour.

• A magnet instead of a tether. Once unscrewed, the cap clicks into a recess in the lid and stays put. From 1.9 litres you pour about six big cups, and after the sixth it's still sitting there instead of somewhere between the gravel and the tyre tracks.
• It stays where you put it. A wide rubber ring sits on the base. It holds the jug in place when someone bumps the folding table and leaves the boot sill underneath without a scratch. After two hours of iced water in the sun, the table top underneath is still dry.
• Two sizes, two weight classes. Filled, the small one weighs about 3.6 kilograms, the big one just under 5.9. One you carry casually in one hand from the boot to the table; the other you plan for and set down once.

Detailing1's tip from the shop: The most common complaint about this jug isn't a defect, it's a lost gasket. It sits as a ring in a groove in the lid and lifts out sideways with two fingers. That's exactly what happens in the dishwasher when the lid is lying loose in the top rack, and after that nobody ever finds it again.

Take the gasket out yourself first and put it in the cutlery basket, the lid in the top rack. Without the gasket the lid drips, and replacements are hard to come by. Second trick from the same corner: freshly brewed filter coffee is above the 85 degrees YETI gives as the upper limit for jug and lid. Let it stand in the jug for two minutes before you screw the lid on, and fill hot drinks to just below the neck, not to the brim.

You're the one with the jug in the boot

The YETI Rambler Jug 2.0 is the jug that gets unpacked on arrival. Folding table at the open tailgate, six cups, and the last one is still steaming like the first one did at half five in the kitchen.

The ritual starts the night before. If you want to leave at half five, you're not brewing coffee in the morning, and that's exactly where the plan falls apart the second time round. Brew it in the evening, fill it, lid on, jug in the hallway. In the morning you grab it on the way past, stand it in the footwell behind the passenger seat and set off.

You pour with one hand on the handle and one on the cup. As you unscrew the cap it goes straight into its recess in the lid and clicks in. Sounds like a small thing until you've experienced the opposite: a cap on a cord knocks against the rim of the cup while you pour, a loose one ends up in the dirt after the second cup and gets screwed back on anyway.

The pour itself stays smooth. A small removable insert in the spout stops the glugging that otherwise sends half of it past the cup. Removable also means it goes through the wash on its own instead of staying stuck in the lid. The handle is a solid stainless steel arc with a rubber grip, and you'll notice that in November: bare steel is unpleasant at seven in the morning, this one isn't, and it doesn't rattle against the body on the drive.

What goes with it are cups that don't need their own spot in the boot. Four stackable insulated cups take up the space of one and end the day next to the jug on the same table. Here in Nordhorn, exactly this combination stands in front of the showroom on meet Saturdays, and the jug is the reason people are already gathered around it at quarter past eight.

Full the big jug weighs almost six kilos

1.9 litres covers half a day for two people. The 3.8-litre jug weighs just under six kilograms when full and only makes sense if several of you are coming or the whole day happens on site.

Plan around the day, not the volume. If you drive there in the morning, stand around for two hours and are back by lunchtime, go small: about 3.6 kilograms full, 25 centimetres tall, carried in one hand and quicker to clean in the evening. If you leave early Saturday and come back Sunday evening, go big. It's about 30 centimetres tall, more like 38 with the handle up, and it lives in the footwell or on the load floor, not on the back seat.

What neither can do is cup holders. At about 15 and 16 centimetres in diameter, these are standing jugs, not driving jugs, and even the nicest holder in the centre console won't change that. For the drive itself, a travel bottle for the cup holder belongs next to the gear lever; the jug stays in the back.

Colour choice is tighter than the overview suggests. We stock Black, Desert Khaki, Navy and Olive Camo, but not every colour comes in both sizes. If you've set your heart on a colour, pick the variant first and the size second. The other way round tends to go wrong.

Two more limits YETI sets itself: nothing fizzy goes in, no sparkling water and no beer, and nothing gets stored in it either, no milk overnight and no leftovers from the day before. Then there's a third one from real-world use: if you regularly carry anything other than water, you'll smell it in the lid sooner or later. Rinse promptly, pull the gasket, let everything air-dry. And even empty, the small one weighs 1.7 kilograms, so for a rucksack or a bike bottle cage it's simply the wrong pick.

After three seasons in the boot it looks like it did the week before last

The reason to buy isn't the hour your coffee stays hot, it's the third summer in which the jug still looks like it did on day one. Everything else at YETI is a bonus.

It lives in the boot, between the toolbox, the jump leads and the crate of cloths. It tips over when you pull away and rolls against the wheel arch lining. In August it stands for hours in a cabin where you wouldn't want to touch anything. One tester dropped his on concrete several times and got scratches, nothing else. Another has used his for almost ten years and calls it the most reliable piece in the whole range.

It ages on the surface, not in function. The coloured versions are powder-coated, and after three seasons in the boot the first dings show up wherever the jug has knocked against metal. That's the point where it starts to look like its owner, not the point where you think about replacing it.

Who it's not for: anyone looking for a jug for the kitchen table. For that it's too heavy, too big and too expensive for a feature nobody needs at home. It earns its keep when the vehicle is where it stands and when kit is part of the deal anyway. If you spend two hours polishing a wing, you're not putting anything on painted surfaces that slides or leaves rings. That's exactly where the two meet.

YETI gives a five-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship across the whole series, and the range of insulated drinkware follows the same logic: buy once instead of three times. Jug and lid are dishwasher-safe, which sets it apart from most jugs you only touch with your fingertips after the third outing.

The trick no manufacturer writes down comes last and takes a minute. Before filling, rinse the empty jug once with hot tap water and tip it out before the coffee goes in. For cold drinks, do the same with cold water and two handfuls of ice cubes, which you also tip out afterwards. It costs you sixty seconds in the morning, and you can still taste the difference two cups later in the late afternoon.

Does the jug fit in a cup holder?

When it's closed tight, yes, YETI lists the jugs as leakproof. That doesn't apply if the lid is only resting on top or half screwed on. Fizzy drinks never go in.

Why is my lid suddenly dripping?

Usually the gasket is missing. It sits in a groove in the lid, lifts out and easily gets lost in the wash. When you put it back, make sure it's seated correctly in the groove, and the lid will seal again.

Does the jug pick up smells?

With anything other than water it can, especially in the lid. Rinse promptly, pull the gasket, let everything air-dry. The jug isn't meant for storing food or milky drinks anyway.

How to use the YETI Rambler Jug 2.0 insulated jug

Fill it in the evening, grab it in the morning, pour one-handed on site

Unscrew the lid completely and fill through the wide opening; ice cubes go in without jamming. Hot drinks at 85 degrees max and only to below the neck, not to the brim. Freshly brewed filter coffee is regularly hotter than that, so leaving it open for two minutes does the job.

Screw the lid on tight, don't just rest it on top. The leakproof claim only applies when it's firmly closed. Fizzy drinks never go in, and nothing gets stored in the jug, neither milky drinks overnight nor leftovers from the day before.

To pour, unscrew the small cap and press it into the recess on the lid, where the magnet holds it until the last cup is full. Leave the insert in the spout so the pour stays smooth and hits the cup. 1.9 litres fills about six big stackable insulated cups.

Jug and lid are dishwasher-safe; the lid goes in the top rack, away from the heating element. Before that, lift the gasket sideways out of its groove with two fingers and put it in the cutlery basket separately. Then let everything dry completely with the lid off before the gasket goes back in its groove.

Notes: The gasket is the only real weak spot. If the lid lies loose in the top rack, the water flushes it out, the lid drips afterwards and replacements are hard to come by. When refitting, make sure it sits the right way round in the groove.
