The YETI Yonder with Straw Cap is the lightweight plastic bottle for water on the go. Flip up the straw, drink, push it back down, done, without unscrewing a lid and putting it down somewhere. It doesn't keep anything cold or hot, fizzy drinks don't belong in it, and the straw needs to see a brush regularly.

The YETI Yonder water bottle with Straw Cap is YETI's non-insulated water bottle for people who want to drink one-handed, without tipping the bottle up and throwing their head back. Straw up, sip, straw down. The cap stays closed the whole time, and there are no loose parts. To refill, the whole cap comes off and you've got a wide opening.

• One move instead of three. With a screw cap you unscrew, drink, screw it back on. Here you flip the straw up with your thumb and push it back down afterwards. That's the difference between drinking and operating a bottle, and you notice it exactly when your other hand is holding a coffee cup, a phone or a door handle.
• It fits most cup holders. At its widest point it measures about 7.9 centimetres, and typical car cup holders take 7 to 9.5. YETI itself says the 0.6 and 0.75 litre sizes fit most holders, while from 1 litre up it gets tight. The flipped-up straw adds height, not width.
• A second straw comes in the box. YETI includes a spare straw with the Straw Cap, and that's worth more than it sounds: there's no Yonder replacement straw sold separately. Plus it's 50 per cent lighter than the stainless steel Rambler bottles, which you'll notice in your rucksack after two hours trackside.

Day-to-day from Detailing1: The most common mistake is a straw left up. The cap only seals with the straw pushed down, and if you lay the bottle on its side in your camera bag with the straw open, you'll be unpacking it wet later. Two seconds of thumb pressure and that's sorted. The second point takes even less time: after filling, give the outside of the thread a quick wipe. If water runs over there, it drips onto your shirt on the first sip, and you end up thinking a perfectly sealed bottle leaks.

Drinking in the paddock without taking your gloves off

The Yonder rides in the cup holder, gets sipped standing up between runs, then sits on the folding table without rolling off. That's all it has to do.

The ritual starts the evening before. Fill the bottle, into the fridge, out in the morning and into the holder. On the drive there in the dark you barely notice it, and in the footwell one thing stands out that isn't on any spec sheet: the bottle has a flattened side. It doesn't roll from left to right at every bend.

At the meet, the same flat side takes on a second job. On a bonnet, a sloping tailgate or a wobbly folding table it stays put instead of wandering off. If you've ever lunged after a bottle sliding across a freshly polished bonnet, you know what that's worth.

The real difference shows when you've got gloves on. You can get a screw cap off with them, but not gracefully. The straw flips up under your thumb, gloved or with greasy fingers, and you don't touch anything that goes near your mouth afterwards. Twenty minutes to the next session, and drinking there isn't about enjoyment, it's planning.

Then there's your head position. From a normal bottle you drink chin up, eyes on the ceiling. With a straw your head stays level. Sounds like nothing, yet it's the reason it beats any Chug Cap on the drive there and standing in the pit lane.

To refill, the whole cap comes off. That leaves a wide opening that takes ice cubes and a bottle brush too. The cap has a loop so the bottle can hang from a carabiner on your rucksack when your hands are full in the paddock yet again.

It isn't insulated, and the straw needs a brush

The YETI Yonder water bottle isn't insulated. Cold turns warm, hot doesn't belong in it, and YETI explicitly rules out fizzy drinks for this line, as well as storing food in it.

On a warm morning the outside gets damp, and on a lacquered table top or a leather console that leaves a ring. Put a cloth or a coaster under it. If your drink needs to stay cold for hours, this is the wrong product; go for the stainless steel insulated bottle instead. If you want light and you drink on the move, this is the one.

The second honest limitation is the straw itself. It's the part you don't have with the Tether or Chug caps: a tube that wants brushing out on the inside, plus a stopper and the seals. If you're after a bottle you rinse once a month and otherwise ignore, a plain screw cap will serve you better.

On leakproofing we stay cautious. YETI calls the cap leakproof when closed; that's the manufacturer's claim. But US customer reviews include reports of a round seal slipping out of the cap and the bottle then dripping while you drink, and a few users report sluggish flow after about two months, which sorted itself out after flipping the straw down and up once. Not a systematic defect, but reason enough not to promise it's safe to throw in a bag.

And then there's personal taste. A wide straw delivers a lot per pull, but some people simply find the sucking tiring and stick with a spout. If you're not sure, buy the bottle and swap the cap later, because all Yonder caps are interchangeable. They won't fit a stainless steel Rambler, though.

Who wants the straw, and who should stick with a screw cap

This bottle is for anyone who drinks while driving, standing or talking, in other words on the side. If you sit down to drink, you don't need the straw.

Because a bottle like this doesn't get pampered. It lies next to the toolbox, sits behind the rear window for hours in July, drops onto tarmac as you get out and slides into the jack. The colour is in the material, not on top of it. A scratch doesn't expose anything different underneath, because underneath it's the same stuff.

The torture tests get specific. GearJunkie drop-tested the Yonder against a Nalgene: at about 1.37 metres the Nalgene's base cracked, while the Yonder kept going until the tester ran out of height. Advnture threw it onto rock, with no dents and no cracks. A two-week test reports very few scratches and nothing else. YETI gives five years against defects in materials and workmanship; scratches and fading aren't covered.

Who it isn't for: anyone taking coffee along in the morning who still wants it hot at ten. Not for mixing powder on the go; that's what the shaker bottle from the same line is for. And not if you drink sparkling water. If you'd rather have a controlled spout than a straw, take the same bottle with the Tether Cap; otherwise, this one.

And then there's the thing that's hard to measure. In this scene, kit is part of who you are. If you keep a tidy boot, sort your microfibre towels by colour and put your weekend car on axle stands over the winter, you've got a certain attitude towards things that last. A bottle that still looks like day one after three seasons fits that. A throwaway plastic bottle in the cup holder doesn't.

The routine no manufacturer writes down costs you two minutes once a week and decides whether you'll still like the straw a year from now. Pull out the straw, run a slim brush through the inside, take the seal out of the cap, rinse both sides, let everything dry separately. Only the small seal on the valve stays in; YETI explicitly says not to pull that one out. Stick with it and after three seasons you've got a straw that tastes of nothing, not one you end up binning.

How do you drink from the Yonder with Straw Cap?

Is there a replacement straw?

The Straw Cap comes with a second straw. So far there's no Yonder replacement straw sold separately; the replacement straws you'll find listed in shops belong to the Rambler line. So hang on to the one in the box instead of chucking it in the kitchen drawer.

Can I swap the cap for a different one?

Yes, within the Yonder line. The Straw, Tether and Chug caps fit all Yonder water bottles and are interchangeable. None of them fits a stainless steel Rambler, and Rambler caps don't fit the Yonder either.

Can I put sparkling water or hot tea in it?

No. YETI explicitly rules out hot and carbonated drinks for both the bottle and the cap, as well as storing food. The Yonder line is built for cold drinks. For hot coffee, the stainless steel Rambler insulated tumbler is the right product.

If there's already build-up in the straw, a soak helps: put all the parts in warm soapy water for up to two hours. For a deep clean, the cap with the mouthpiece flipped up and the round seal go into boiling water for five minutes.

Good to know: Dishwasher safe, and hand washing is explicitly fine too. No chlorine bleach, no abrasive cleaners, no scouring pads. Don't use it for hot or carbonated drinks, or for storing food or perishables. The cap is leakproof when closed (manufacturer's claim), but we won't promise it's safe to throw in a bag. Always store it open and dry, never closed with moisture left in the cap. A spare straw comes with the cap. All Yonder caps are interchangeable, but they don't fit stainless steel Rambler bottles.
